The ending of Invincible season 2 saw our hero Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) being warned by the Viltrumite Empire that they will soon return to monitor how he's doing preparing Earth for a takeover. In the new season, Mark remains on Earth, not to prime it, but to protect it against the universe's most fearsome foes. He's stronger and faster than ever... but so are his enemies.

However, it's not the ever-looming threat of the Viltrumites that causes him the most trouble in season 3. The threats are a lot closer to home. As we see in the trailer, threats come in the form of Powerplex (Aaron Paul), and even Global Defense Agency leader Cecil Stedman (Walton Goggins), who's nominally working with Mark to help get ready for what's coming. Based on what we see in the trailer, that partnership does not last:

In the trailer, you'll notice that Mark has changed out of the blue-and-yellow suit he wore during the first two seasons and put on a black-and-blue one, just as he does in the comics. The new suit symbolizes Mark's new era as a hero, one is more willing to shoulder the huge responsibilites he is faced with. "This is a very dark period in Mark's life," creator Robert Kirkman told SFX Magazine. No longer is he the understudy to his defected father. He's now Earth's most powerful hero. "Season 3 is where he gets put through the most intense paces he's experienced thus far."

"One of the most exciting things about season 3, for me, is really just the scale of it. What we're trying to do on this show at all times is think about that audience perception. We think about how savvy people are watching all these streaming shows so we're figuring out ways to go, 'You think this show is going to go this way? Guess what? It's not.' We accomplished that in a lot of different ways in season three that I think people are going to be pretty shocked by.""

The first two seasons of Invincible already provided plenty of shocks, and it feels like the show is only gaining confidence as it reaches the middle parts of Mark's story. Season 3 premieres on February 6, when Prime Video will drop the first three episodes all at once. The season runs for 8 episodes, and unlike with season 2, this time there's no mid-season break!

Season 3 could be when Invincible blows up into a proper phenomenon of a show, expecially with more A-list talent continuing to join the cast:
