Invincible replaced a major star and no one noticed

The third season of Invincible is off and running on Prime Video. In the latest episode, "This Was Supposed to Be Easy," teenaged superhero Mark Grayson reunites with Titan, who used to be an enforcer for the crime boss Machine Head. Mark helped Titan take down Machine Head in the first season...but it was all part of Titan's play to replace his old boss. Mark ended that episode betrayed and beaten to a bloody pulp, as tends to happen to him. In the new episode, Mark once again entered into an alliance with Titan, this time against his better judgement. Titan was still playing his own game, but at least Mark didn't end up in the hospital this time.

In the first season, Titan was played by none other than Mahershala Ali, who is a big name even by the standards of this series; the man has won two Oscars. He's in great company. Mark is voiced by Oscar nominee Steven Yeun. Mark's mom Debbie is played by the iconic Sandra Oh and his dad Nolan by national treasure J.K. Simmons. Seth Green voices Allen the Alien. Mark Hamill is Art RosenbaumIn, superhero tailor. In the new season, Marvel veteran Simu Liu voices minor antagonist Multi-Paul. I could easily keep going, but you get the idea; the cast of this show is insane.

Maybe it's only natural, then, that the show can't retain all of its talent from season to season. While a ton of the big-name cast members have returned, Mahershala Ali was not back as Titan in "This Was Supposed to Be Easy"; instead, the character was played by actor Todd Williams, who's worked steadily in movies and TV since the early 2000s, having played recurring roles in shows like The Vampire Diaries and Teen Wolf.

Invincible is a popular show and the cast kills it every time, although I have to wonder if it's worth paying out what I imagine are exorbitant salaries for tons of big-name actors when casting performers with lower profiles would probably be just as good, not to mention spread the wealth around a bit to people who aren't already untouchably successful. Then again, the star-studded nature of the show is one of the reasons Invincible is fun to watch.

New episodes of Invincible drop Thursdays on Prime Video. Tomorrow's episode stars Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul as a new character. Paul's former costar Bryan Cranston reportedly continues to turn down offers to work on the show.
