The second season of Squid Game is now available to watch on Netflix! The new season has seven episodes, down from nine in season 1. It picks up where the first season left off, with the winner of the previous Squid Games, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), trying to hunt down the people who put the Squid Games together in the first place, and to end the games if he can.
Without getting too deep into spoilers, he's unsuccessful. Gi-hun ends up mounting a rebellion against the organizers of the Squid Games from within their island stronghold, but despite putting up a valiant effort, his resistance is ultimately put down. That's where we leave him at the end of season 2.
But we do see one more quick sequence after the first batch of credits roll. We see a few contestants walk into a large room; the walls of the room are painted to look like the sky. The contestants we can see bear the numbers 096, 353 and 100. The first two contestants don't do anything of note during the season, but 100 is the middle-aged man who's deeper in debt than pretty much anyone else in the Squid Games. Between rounds, he is constantly pushing his fellow contestants to remain in the Squid Games rather than take whatever money they've amassed so far and go home. He becomes one of the leaders of that group, marked by the 'O' patches they wear on their chests after voting to stay.
The trio of contestants approach a large statute of a little girl, which looks very similar to the one from the Red Light, Green Light game. But if you look closely, it's not the same statue. The girl statute we're used to is wearing a dress with a shirt under it, whereas this new one looks to be wearing a skirt with suspenders over her shoulders.
Weirder still is the reveal of an equally sized statue of a young boy set up across from the girl statue. The boy statue is wearing a hat and a green-and-black striped shirt. There is also a pair of lights of the kind you might see at a railroad crossing. The last thing we see in the post-credits sequence is the lights change from red to green.
We can also faintly hear chatter in the background. My guess is that this is a preview of some new game we'll only see in Squid Game season 3. Perhaps it's a new take on Red Light, Green Light, but this time there will be two statues detecting players' movements, not just one.
We'll find out for sure when the third and final season of Squid Game comes out sometime in 2025. These final two seasons were filmed back to back, so we won't have to wait nearly as long for the third season as we did for the second.
