Superman, formerly Superman: Legacy, is a new live-action Superman movie starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. Directed by Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn, Warner Bros. Discovery hopes to use the film to launch a whole new DC Cinematic Universe, so there's a lot riding on it.

WBD is taking its time getting people hyped for the film. To wit, they've released not one but two teasers for a teaser trailer that's going to drop this Thursday. That's a lot of teasing. The first one shows Corenswet in his Superman best soaring into the sky. "Look up," we're told.

The music you hear there is a slowed down, melancholy verson of John Williams' original Superman theme that became famous after Superman: The Movie starring Christopher Reeve came out in 1978. The original tune is very famous and much more bombastic:

We got one more teaser for the teaser trailer. This one slowly dials in on a Superman insignia on the floor, possibly in Superman's Fortress of Solitude. It also includes the advice to "Look up." We have a tagline!

So be on the lookout later this week for a proper Superman teaser trailer...and sometime after that we'll get an actual full-length trailer. The hype cycles for these things are very long.

The new Superman movie is scheduled to come out in theaters on July 25, 2025. We'll see how successful it is at launching this new cinematic universe. Historically, while it's impossible to keep people away from movies about Batman, Superman has had less success on the big screen. An attempt to build a new series with Brandon Routh as Clark Kent didn't pan out after 2006's Superman Returns did merely okay at the box office, rather than spectacularly. Henry Cavill's turn as Superman was more successful — Man of Steel made a bundle in 2013 — but returns diminished after that, with both Batman v Superman and Justice League dividing fans.

Can Corenswet and Gunn create the mega-hit Superman movies WBD is looking for? It doesn't pay to underestimate Gunn. He took the Guardians of the Galaxy, a fairly obscure superhero team, and produced great returns for Disney and Marvel. His new series Creature Commandos, an animated show about a bunch of a chaotic anti-heroes, is charming audiences over on Max. But Superman will be the real test.

Meanwhile, a sequel to The Batman starring Robert Pattinson will come out in 2026. And Gunn is producing a separate Batman called The Brave and the Bold starring someone who hasn't been cast yet. There's pretty much no doubt that those movies will be hits, since Batman is box office gold. As for Superman, it'll be up to you.
