With movies and shows like Deadpool, The Boys, Invincible, Peacemaker becoming hits, the superhero genre is seeing more and more mature projects nowadays. It's become a hugely popular side of superhero storytelling, and new DC head James Gunn is keen to pursue R-rated projects in his rebooted DC Universe. That's not a huge surprise after Gunn directed The Suicide Squad, itself an R-rated superhero movie.

James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC Universe will kick off next year with Superman, which introduces David Corenswet as the all-new Man of Steel. The movie, directed by Gunn, is influenced by beloved comics Superman for All Seasons and All-Star Superman and will likely stick to the family-friendly side of things. However, as time passes, Gunn is happy to introduce R-rated content, so long as it fits the story he's trying to tell.

"It's not about testing out to see if this thing works," Gunn told Collider. "It's just about telling a story. If a story is going to be R-rated, we're totally okay with that. If it's going to be PG, PG-13, or G, I don't care — whatever is worthy of the story, that's what we're going to do."

What he's not going to do is test out R-rated movies to see how they perform before making more. Rather, if a story fits the rating and benefits from it, Gunn has no issue with moving ahead with more mature themes. It's about picking the right moments.

""We're not about that. We're not about 'See how it does.' We've got one opportunity to take these characters and really press forward and do what we believe. I am a great believer that if we tell good, authentic stories, if a movie does well or doesn't do as well, if you keep with that same philosophy, that you're going to build a universe that people are going to love and want to be a part of for a long time.""

In conclusion, Gunn teased that there are "more than one" potentially R-rated projects that are close to being green-lit by DC Studios. In the meantime, the franchise officially kicks off with animated series Creature Commandos, which premieres December 5 on Max.

Daniel Craig linked with DC move!

Speaking of the upcoming DC Universe, Hollywood icon Daniel Craig is the most recent actor to be linked with a role. The beloved James Bond actor has reportedly been approached to play the titular character in DC Studios feature Sgt. Rock, about a hardened World War II soldier. The movie, helmed by Luca Guadagnino, is in early stages of development and nothing has been green-lit yet.

Given his history as an action star, Daniel Craig seems the perfect man to play Sgt. Rock. The report from Deadline adds that the casting has not been confirmed yet. It's worth keeping an eye out to see how it develops, though!
