Jensen Ackles talks reuniting with Supernatural costars on The Boys

The former Dean Winchester says it was "weird" to work with Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins again on the set of a different show.

Now that The Boys is about to wrap up with its fifth and final season (scheduled for release in 2026), star Jensen Ackles — who plays the morally challenged superhero Soldier Boy — has been reflecting fondly on the filming experience, especially since it reunited him with his Supernatural co-stars Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins, who played Sam Winchester and the angel Castiel on The CW show.

For The Boys, Padalecki and Collins joined the series in guest roles, though details regarding who they will play are being kept under wraps. Speaking with People, Ackles revealed that seeing them again on a new set was a little "weird," almost like "inviting my friends over to somebody else's house for dinner." He jokingly added that he didn't want them to make him "look bad" in front of his new friends!

Even though the long-running CW series ended after 15 seasons and a whopping 327 episodes in 2020, the Supernatural stars have remained in touch and still see each other regularly. According to Ackles, they reconnect "at least once a month."

I'm sure their reunion was made easier by the fact that The Boys and Supernatural share a creator in Eric Kripke, who stepped down from Supernatural as showrunner after five seasons.

Potential for more Supernatural reunions is minimal

Fans are hopeful that The Boys season 5 might also reunite Padalecki and Ackles with Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who once played their on-screen dad John Winchester. While Morgan and Ackles have been on The Boys at the same time, they haven't had a chance to share any scenes. Morgan's character, Joe Kessler, was only present as (spoiler!) Billy Butcher's hallucination.

Another Supernatural alum — Jim Beaver, who played Bobby Singer — also stars on The Boys. Actually, Beaver's character on The Boys, former President Robert Singer, is itself a reference to Bobby.

It'd be pretty amazing to get to see all five of them onscreen together again, but given the nature of Morgan's character, it's hard to imagine that happening in a believable way.

The fifth season of The Boys won't be the first time Padalecki and Ackles have reunited since Supernatural ended five years ago. Ackles previously directed an episode of Padalecki's CW series Walker, a reboot of the 1990s crime drama Walker, Texas Ranger. In addition to directing, Ackles had a small cameo in the episode, though he and Padalecki didn't share any screen time.

Filming on The Boys season 5 has wrapped, but Ackles will soon step back into Soldier Boy's suit to film prequel series Vought Rising, which he stars in alongside Aya Cash's Stormfront. Apart from that, Ackles is also starring in the Amazon series Countdown, with new episodes streaming on Wednesdays.
