The 2025 Emmys have come and gone, and HBO's The Last of Us didn't quite sweep the night as many had hoped. Despite earning 16 nominations for its second season, the hit series walked away with just one win, which was for Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series. While this was unfortunate for fans who expected a bigger haul, the good news is that we haven't seen the last of The Last of Us. See what we did there?

The hit post-apocalyptic drama series has already been confirmed for a third season, which will start airing on HBO sometime in 2027. This means the show has another opportunity to reclaim its Emmy glory. Season 1 managed to secure eight wins. That brings the total Emmy count for The Last of Us to nine, including its lone win from season 2.

After that jaw-dropping season 2 finale, everyone's ready to see how the story will continue to unfold. What happened to Ellie (Bella Ramsey), and where exactly is Abby? The Last of Us season 3 will see Kaitlyn Dever return as the Abby character and take center stage. While season 2 adapted the first half of The Last of Us Part II, season 3 will cover more of it. We'll get a deep dive into Abby's backstory, which should be exciting for video game fans.

While on the red carpet at the 2025 Emmys, Entertainment Tonight got the chance to speak with The Last of Us star and asked her about how she feels knowing that she’ll be stepping into such a pivotal role in the upcoming season. Dever responded by saying that she's still "processing" everything and knows that she has "big shoes to fill."

In other words, she recognizes the challenge of taking on such an important role and respects the work that’s come before her. When asked if her fellow co-stars Ramsey and Pedro Pascal have given her any advice ahead of shooting season 3, Dever told Entertainment Tonight that they’ve been incredibly supportive, encouraging her to "eat a lot and sleep a lot" to keep up her energy and stamina as she steps into the lead role.

Honestly, it shouldn't be a hard transition for Dever when it comes to training since she was already involved in some pretty intense and action-packed scenes in season 2. Now that she's the lead, her training will likely just be more rigorous and demanding. But with Ramsey and Pascal's advice, she should feel a little more at ease and ready to tackle the physical challenges of leading The Last of Us season 3.
