Kanye West is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold over 160 million records and winning 24 Grammys while he was at it. Fans have been more split on him recently, with newer albums often getting overshadowed by social media meltdowns or weird scandals, like the way his private school Donda Academy has been riddled with lawsuits alleging major malfeasance.
So things have gotten kind of weird for Ye over the past several years, but people still listen when he talks. They were listening the other day when he took to his Instagram and posted a video of himself playing The Last of Us Part II, the zombie adventure game put out by Naughty Dog. "Last of Us 2 on Survivor + mode got me spending all day on one board," he wrote. "By faaaaaaarrrr the best game ever made so far. This is not a sponsored post."
Survivor+ is the second highest difficulty setting, for the record. The Last of Us Part II was met with a ton of backlash when it released in 2020, with fans incredibly divided over some of its bold plot twists; the gameplay itself wasn't nearly as contentious. Maybe that's why Kanye is into it; he and the game can bond over being controversial.
Anyway, this kind of press can only benefit HBO's The Last of Us TV show, which will adapt The Last of Us Part II in its upcoming second season. (Actually, the second season will only adapt half the game; a third will wrap things up later on. After that, who knows?) Overall, those shocking plot twists I mentioned have aged pretty well, and I don't expect HBO will get anywhere near as much blowback for the show as Naughty Dog got for the game.
We'll await the verdict of the fans whenever The Last of Us season 2 premieres on HBO and Max, most likely sometime this spring. And maybe Kanye will throw in his two cents as well, why not?
