The Family Plan is a 2023 action-comedy I've never heard of starring Mark Wahlberg as a husband and father happily living in the suburbs who has hidden his past as an elite government assassin from his family. When that past comes knocking, he piles his family into their minivan for a roadtrip. Can he fight off the hired goons trying to kill him while growing closer with his family and entertaining the masses with gags about changing diapers? Absolutely he can.
The Family Plan received poor reviews from critics and middling reviews from audiences, but clearly people saw it; why else would Apple TV+ be making a sequel? It feels like one of those streaming-only movies that gets watched by a pretty good number of people but seems to make no impact on the wider culture. I've never heard someone mention this movie. Have you mentioned it? Surely someone out there is passionate about this film.
Anyway, Deadline reports that Game of Thrones veteran Kit Harington (Jon Snow) will be joining an upcoming sequel to The Family Plan. The new movie will take Dan (Wahlberg), his wife Jessica (Michelle Monaghan) and their kids (Zoe Colletti, Van Crosby and a baby) to Europe for a Christmas vacation that will surely get rudely interrupted by mobsters or pirates or corrupt government operatives or someone else who wants Dan dead.
Harington's role hasn't been revealed, but I have him pegged for a grizzled English gangster who has a score to settle with Dan. Or an unassuming, tea-loving Englishman who gets caught in the crossfire as Dan and his family face down mafiosos in Trafalgar Square. It could go either way.
I'm being a little glib here, but I'm sure The Family Plan and its sequel will find a warm reception among their target audience, whoever exactly that is. As for Harington, he's been exploring lots of different roles since ending his time on Game of Thrones, including as an antagonist on HBO's high finance drama Industry. Appearing in something like The Family Plan 2: Subtitle Forthcoming further rounds him out as a movie star. There's no release date for it as of yet.
