The Legend of Zelda wraps filming
Filming on The Legend of Zelda began in New Zealand in November 2025, utilizing many of the same iconic locations from Peter Jackson's seminal The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Principal photography officially wrapped in mid-April 2026, as announced at CinemaCon. The film in now in post-production, all set for its may 2027 release date.
“We just wrapped production on Nintendo’sThe Legend of Zelda— based, perhaps, on the most beloved gaming franchise of all time that sold over 180 million copies in four decades,” president of Sony’s motion picture group Sanford Panitch said, per The Hollywood Reporter. “It has been produced by the creator himself, Miyamoto, along with Avi Arad, and it’s directed by Wes Ball, whose most recent Planet of the Apes movie was a box office hit.”
He continued: "The film releases worldwide May 7, 2027. We and the legion of fans everywhere cannot wait. And video game adaptations continue to be a significant focus for us.”

The big-budget, live-action Legend of Zelda movie stars Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (The Haunting of Bly Manor, Pinocchio) as Link and Bo Bragason (Renegade Nell) as Princess Zelda.
The adaptation is helmed by Wes Ball, the man behind the Maze Runner movies and the much-acclaimed reboot of the Planet of the Apes franchise. It is also produced by esteemed Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, the very man who created Zelda—so it's in good hands. The film marks the first-ever time The Legend of Zelda has been adapted into a live-action movie.
To say video game adaptations have been a significant focus would be a massive understatement. There's plenty of big screen forays in the works, such as an R-rated, animated adaptation of Bloodburne, one of the most popular PlayStation games ever. A movie adaptation of Helldivers has also been put in the works, with Jason Momoa poised to star.
The Legend of Zelda movie is slated for release on May 7, 2027 from Nintendo and Sony Pictures.
