There's no doubt that The Lord of the Rings movies are some of the most popular and beloved fantasy movies over 20 years after their release, and they are constantly rewatched by fans year after year, month after month. Unfortunately, there's some bad news for fans hoping to have a marathon of the trilogy on a certain streaming platform in August 2025.

The last day to watch The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King on Prime Video is Thursday, July 31, as all three The Lord of the Rings movies are set to depart Amazon's streaming service on Friday, Aug. 1. As of this writing, there's still plenty of time to sneak in one last watch of every movie or at least your favorite of the trio!

It's surely a bummer for The Lord of the Rings fans, especially since Prime Video is the exclusive streaming home of the franchise's prequel spinoff series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which is currently in production on its upcoming third season. Hopefully, by the time The Rings of Power season 3 premieres, the movies will have returned on Prime Video.

Even though The Lord of the Rings trilogy will vanish from Prime Video in August 2025, there are still additional way to watch and stream the movies. Of course, there's home video sets, including DVDs and Blu-rays that feature both the theatrical and extended versions. You can also buy or rent the movies on digital platforms if you're not looking to own the movies on disc.

When it comes to streaming, all three The Lord of the Rings movies (and The Hobbit trilogy, too) are available on HBO Max, and that includes both the theatrical and extended versions. Honestly, it's a better deal to watch the movies on HBO Max for diehard fans. Prime Video didn't even have the extended versions available to stream! Both versions of each movie can also be available on Hulu if you're subscribed to the bundle.

These movies are enormously popular and will never be unavailable to watch on streaming services in some form. Over the years, they have come and gone on Netflix. Now that they're leaving Prime Video, that makes them ready to find a secondary streaming home outside of HBO Max. They aren't coming to Netflix in August, but maybe we'll see them pop up sometime before the end of 2025.
