After a long wait, the first official trailer for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew has finally released online! The feature film, directed and written by Greta Gerwig, is getting a theatrical debut in 2027, eventually followed by an exclusive streaming release on Netflix. The movie is an adaptation of the sixth novel of the beloved children’s book series by C.S. Lewis, and a prequel to the first novel of the series, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
This is the first Narnia film adaptation from Gerwig, who secured a deal with Netflix in the early 2020s to helm two movies in the Narnia universe. These films are considered separate from the live-action features released by Disney (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader), and are instead a reboot of the franchise.
Starting with The Magician’s Nephew is a smart move on Netflix’s part, which establishes that a never-before-seen adaptation means an entirely new experience. And from the look of the trailer, fans have an experience that is both new and nostalgic awaiting them!
Magic and mystery abound in the trailer for Narnia: The Magician's Nephew
The trailer for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew opens with the reveal of the iconic wardrobe from the first book in the Chronicles of Narnia series. We then get a first glimpse of the story’s main characters; Daniel Craig is Andrew Ketterley, the titular magician, and his nephew, Digory, is played by David McKenna. Digory’s friend and neighbor is Polly Plummer (Beatrice Campbell), who joins him in his fantasy adventure.
After the characters’ introductions, we see Digory enamored with a cart horse on the road. Just then, a delivery truck drives up alongside, with a pair of wings as the logo that aligns perfectly with the horse (a foreshadowing of events to come, as fans of the book will no doubt recognize). We then have Digory and Polly making their way through a crawl space that leads to his uncle’s magical laboratory.
With his secret discovered, Andrew presents Digory with a magical yellow ring. Putting on the ring transports Digory into a forest of gnarled green trees, where he and Polly venture into the strange unknown world. They witness other magical wonders as well, such as a door covered in strange runes, and a dark room filled with floating objects.
But now we come to the two biggest highlights of the trailer: the introductions of Jadis (Emma Mackey), also known as the evil White Witch, and Aslan (Meryl Streep), Narnia’s creator and protector. Jadis is revealed with dark glittery eyeshadow, short black hair, and a strange chainmail dress. We first see her in the other world before she stands off against a police constable in a London street.
Aslan’s introduction is, naturally, breathtakingly beautiful, as he appears before Andrew, Digory, and Polly as a celestial being made of stars. The lion then lets out a mighty roar as he comes to life, bringing the dark space into light. Unfortunately the voice of legendary actor Meryl Streep is not yet revealed in this trailer, but hopefully we'll get a taste in the next one.
As a longtime fan of the Narnia books, I have to say that this trailer has me very excited for Narnia: The Magician's Nephew. Greta Gerwig has clearly done something special and unique, while also seemingly staying true to the wonder and magic of the book.
Narnia: The Magician's Nephew is set for a theatrical release date of February 12, 2027, and a Netflix streaming date of April 2, 2027.
