Mortality isn't exactly permanent in the Star Wars universe; look no further than Darth Maul and Emperor Palpatine, who both died and are resurrected. The idea of bringing back previously killed off characters is never out of the question (especially as Force Ghosts), and former star Natalie Portman has a wild idea for how she could return as Padmé Amidala.

Portman played Padmé, the Queen and then Senator of Naboo, throughout all three movies in the prequel trilogy. The character ultimately died under tragic circumstances in Revenge of the Sith; after being force-choked by former lover Anakin following his descent into Darth Vader, she later dies of a broken heart.

Portman has not played the character for 20 years now, although Padmé's story itself has expanded through the animated series The Clone Wars, as well as various novels and comics. As for big screen returns, nothing is completely out of the cards. For Portman, she has her own very ambitious pitch for a return.

While promoting her new movie Fountain of Youth on The One Show, she was asked whether she would ever consider playing Padmé again in Star Wars. “With a lightsaber," she replied (per Collider). "I think she’d have to be a Jedi. If somehow she were brought back from the dead, that would be exciting.”

Of course, such a return would have to be done tastefully. Pleasing masses of fans would be incredibly difficult — the last thing anyone wants is a line akin to "Somehow, Palpatine retuned." Perhaps a chance to bring her back would be through the anthology anime series Star Wars: Visions, which lies outside the traditional canon. Portman could return for a voice role.

Would you like to see Portman return as Padmé, or do you think the character's original death should be kept untouched? The latest Star Wars project is Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld, now streaming on Disney+.
