Negan and Lucille reunite in The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 trailer
By Ashley Hurst
During New York Comic-Con, The Walking Dead showed off the franchise's next installment, Dead City season 2. First airing in 2023, Dead City was the first Walking Dead spinoff to follow the conclusion of the main show. It follows Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) as they explore a post-apocalyptic Manhattan in search of Maggie's kidnapped son, Hershel.
The debut season of Dead City garnered fantastic reviews; we called it the franchise's best spinoff at the time! So naturally, AMC promptly green-lit the series for another season. By the end of season 1, Maggie had reunited with Hershel after tricking Negan into assisting her, delivering him right into the Dama's hands. Now, Negan has been handed power to do what he does best: keep everyone in Manhattan in order. And yes, it seems he's remade Lucille, his infamous barbed wire bat! Check out the trailer below:
During The Walking Dead panel at New York Comic Con, Jeffrey Dean Morgan explained how Negan has changed and adapted to different situations over the years. “There’s something to be said for anybody that’s still alive in the apocalypse," he said, per The A.V. Club. "The fact that we have survived this long, including Negan, he’s figured it out. It’s meant a lot of different things over the years. He used to be all about in-your-face leadership and fear, but he’s changed. I admire his ability to adapt and read a room."
"Negan’s been a chess player. This year, he’s maybe not going to be able to do it as much though. I like that he has a soft spot for the younger generation and wants them to survive."
As for Cohan, she believes that Maggie has "worn blinders" to cover some of the decisions she's made in the past, such as not killing Negan. "She has not killed one person who is the source of so much unrest. In so many ways, the best is yet to come for what it takes to find inner strength, constantly face a nemesis, and try to understand why one doesn’t take the easy road," she said.
Looking ahead to season 2, Cohan reveals that Maggie won't have a straightforward season. "This season, she makes a lot of mistakes.”
The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 has set a release date of Spring 2025. In the meantime, check out Daryl Dixon season 2, which is now airing on AMC!
