Netflix forced Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 to reduce its episode count

Audiences are asking for more episodes in a season, but streaming services are doing the opposite. Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 will only have seven episodes.

There was a time in television history when a single season could be over 20 episodes long, with each episode running for nearly an hour. Furthermore, entire seasons were released just a single year apart from each other. Needless to say, audiences worldwide lived in harmony. Then, everything changed when the streaming nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of four elements, could stop them. But when the world needed him most, his Netflix series was cut an episode short.

In the latest issue of VFX Magazine (via GamesRadar), Avatar: The Last Airbender executive producer Christine Boylan revealed that the second season was intended to have eight episodes, much like its predecessor, but Netflix ultimately decided against those plans:

"Netflix gives very little real estate when it comes to episodes. We have seven episodes this time round, and while we wrote eight, cutting that down forced us to focus in on key themes. So while we knew we couldn't include everything, fans can certainly expect to see elements of the fan-favourite episode 'The Tales of Ba Sing Se' throughout the series."

The statement seemingly confirms that we won't get an episode in Avatar: The Last Airbender dedicated exclusively to adapting the events of "The Tales of Ba Sing Se," but rather see events spread out, which is bound to disappoint some fans. After all, it quickly became one of the fan-favorite episodes of the original cartoon series, not because it moved the plot forward, but because it gave us a better insight into the minds of the characters we all know and love while also making the world around them feel alive.

Throughout the original Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon, we see Aang eager to skip training and go directly into the action. That is the reason why he burned Katara while learning fire control in the first place. So, many of the lessons that Aang (and, thereby, the audience) learn have to do with being patient and calm, and "The Tales of Ba Sing Se" perfectly captures that idea. This episode is a breather from all the chaos, and it also proves that sometimes the biggest adventures are hidden in the little things.

Granted, it is understandable why Netflix doesn't want to dedicate half an hour to adapting an episode that doesn't help move the plot forward. However, you're also losing a lot of the heart and charm of the source material with this decision. Fortunately, there are still other fan-favorite episodes that will be adapted into live-action, as revealed by Boylan:

"There are certain episodes we knew we couldn't cut. 'Zuko Alone,' for example, we knew had to be in there, and it was such an honour to be able to direct that episode too. The thing is, there's never enough time to do everything one-to-one, but we try and draw as much inspiration as possible from every aspect of Avatar: The Last Airbender."

Reliable insider Daniel Richtman reports that early reactions to Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 are more positive than season 1. Hopefully, that means that the creative team behind the Netflix adaptation made the most of the fewer episodes they were able to work with.

It's impossible to make a one-to-one adaptation of the source material (and even if that were the case, it's better to just watch the source material in question), but hopefully all the elements that made audiences fall in love with Book Two of the animated series will be present in the upcoming Netflix season.

All seven episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 will be released on Netflix on June 25, 2026.
