Fans of The Witcher have grown accustomed to having to wait years between seasons of the show, but it looks like that is about to change!
Throughout its run, The Witcher has released new seasons every two years with season 1 dropping in 2019, season 2 in 2021, season 3 in 2023, and season 4 in 2025. For this reason, many fans were prepared to have to wait until 2027 for the final season to drop. Thankfully, the wait for the final season won’t be as long as fans anticipated as Netflix has officially confirmed The Witcher season 5 will be released this year.
On January 7, Netflix released the Ultimate Guide to What’s Coming in 2026, an in-depth breakdown of the many Netflix shows and movies coming in the new year. Among the titles confirmed to release this year is The Witcher season 5, marking the first official confirmation from Netflix that the final season will be releasing in 2026.
The move is one that honestly makes a lot of sense for Netflix.
Seasons 4 and 5 were both written and filmed back-to-back with production wrapping in September 2025. With filming on season 5 already complete, the show has been in post-production and will remain in post-production for several additional months as the finishing touches are made on the season, including special effects and ADR. While Netflix could have chosen to sit on the season until 2027, releasing the final season in 2026 is a much better move. Interest in the show has already begun declining and sitting on the season would likely lead to further decline in interest among fans.
What will be interesting is to see when Netflix chooses to roll the season out. While it has confirmed season 5 is coming out in 2026, Netflix has not given an exact release date for The Witcher’s final season. It’s expected that the season will not release until the second part of the year, though it’s always possible we could see another late June release for the show.
Given the lower performance of season 4, which debuted in October, we have to wonder if Netflix might look to try a December release for the season. The first two seasons each released in December ahead of the Christmas holiday, and those seasons performed incredibly well for Netflix. Perhaps by releasing the final season in December 2026, the viewership totals will improve, with the return to the pre-Christmas release helping to lift the show’s final season numbers.
We’ll have to wait to see when Netflix slots the show in, but what we do know is that fans are in for an epic conclusion to the hit fantasy show.
In confirming The Witcher season 5 for 2026, Netflix released the first synopsis for the final season which will see Geralt and Yennefer facing obstacles and enemies unlike anything they’ve faced before.
“The time of the end is nigh: dark forces are aligning all across the Continent with villainous designs on Ciri. Even if Geralt and Yennefer can save their daughter and fulfill their last wish of reuniting as a family, they’ll have to face obstacles — and enemies — the likes of which they’ve never faced before.”
Hopefully, The Witcher will stick the ending with its final season and leave its fans a bit more fulfilled than the final season of Stranger Things left its fans. We’ll find out when The Witcher season 5 hits Netflix later this year.
