Impact Winter is an Audible Originals podcast that started back in 2022. A comet hits the Earth, kicking up huge clouds of dust into the sky and covering the sun. And who should emerge in this new never-ending night? Vampires. The podcast is set in the United Kingdom and mostly follows two sisters who were children when the comet hit: Darcy and Hope Dunraven. Darcy, the older sister, became a fierce vampire slayer, while her younger sister Hope was mostly confined to a bunker. She longs to be free and even entertains the idea of becoming a vampire so she can at least walk around outside.
Now, Deadline reports that Netflix is turning Impact Winter into a TV show. There's no news on casting yet, but Francis Lawrence — who helmed every movie in The Hunger Games series save the first one — is on board to direct.
There's no release date for the Impact Winter show as of yet. Netflix is picking it up at the right time. The podcast is extremely popular, boasting almost 6 million subscribers. There will be a built-in fanbase when and if the TV show makes it to air. And there's a fourth and final season of the Impact Winter podcast on the way, so Netflix will soon have the complete source material to work with.
It's not uncommon for TV shows to be based on podcasts, but it's rare for them to be big hits. The talk show Comedy Bang! Bang! is one of the more obvious success stories. But you also have cases like the Prime Video series Lore, based off the horror podcast of the same name; that one was canceled after a pair of little-watched seasons.
Perhaps Impact Winter can break some new ground and become the first genre drama based on a podcast to be a huge hit. If not, Lawrence has other irons in the fire. He's working on a sequel to his 2005 superhero movie Constantine with Keanu Reeves:
