Hell is about to get a whole lot hotter! Today Netflix announced that it's officially renewed Adi Shankar's animated Devil May Cry series for a second season. And barely a week after the series premiered on April 3, no less!

Devil May Cry is a pulse-pounding action series which follows Dante, a red trenchcoat-wearing devil hunter with a bad attitude and even badder moves, as he slices through the demon armies of hell. It's based on the long-running video game series from Capcom, which has built legions of fans over the years with its stylish high-octane gameplay, gothic atmosphere, and memorable characters. Shankar's series successfully translated the franchise to the small screen while carving out a totally new story, and it's clearly gone over well.

"Season 1 debuted at #4 on the global top 10 list with 5.3M views in just three days, reached the top 10 in 87 countries and boasts a 95% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes," reads Netflix's press release. Is it any surprise the streamer pulled the trigger so quickly on season 2?

What will happen in Devil May Cry season 2?

The first season of Devil May Cry left off on a number of huge cliffhangers. Dante was captured by the forces of Darkcom, a secret organization working on behalf of the U.S. government to fight the demon threat. Darkcom led an incursion into the demon world of Hell, aka Makai, setting up a detention center for captive demons as they waged a campaign against the demon lord Mundus. And leading that detention center was none other than Arius, the whacky businessman sorcerer villain of Devil May Cry 2. And of course, we also got the reveal that Dante's brother Vergil is working as one of Mundus' lieutenants, a key storyline from the video game that the anime is now poised to explore.

That gives Shankar quite a lot of options for where to take Devil May Cry next. Whatever path he chooses for Dante and the rest of the gang, hopefully it won't be too long before we see it. The fact that Netflix renewed the series so quickly could be a good sign that they'll want to get moving as fast as possible on the follow-up, which would be fine by me. We can't leave Dante chilling in cryo for too long, after all!

Devil May Cry stars Johnny Yong Bosch as Dante, Scout Taylor-Compton as Mary Arkham/Lady, Hoon Lee as White Rabbit, Chris Coppola as Enzo, and Kevin Conroy as Vice President Baines. All eight episodes of season 1 are available now on Netflix! We'll have our ear to the ground for more news about season 2.
