Just a couple weeks ahead of the Wednesday season 2 premiere on Netflix, the streaming service had some surprise news for fans that's not so spooky. The fan-favorite global phenomenon has officially been renewed for season 3!
Jenna Ortega's set to reprise her her titular role as Wednesday Addams in Wednesday season 3. The actress, who was nominated for an Emmy Award for her performance in season 1, broke the news of the early renewal alongside executive producer and director Tim Burton in a joint interview with The Hollywood Reporter. But that's not the only exciting news the pair shared.
According to the interview, Netflix has also been exploring a potential spinoff idea that would take place in the world of Wednesday, though it hasn't yet been revealed who or what the possible offshoot series would focus on. For now, the concept is "top secret," though co-creator Alfred Gough says, "It’s something we’re definitely noodling; there are other characters we can look at."

Wednesday season 3 renewed, spinoff series eyed by Netflix
Netflix's chief content officer Bela Bajaria further teased of the potential Wednesday spinoff series, "There’s a lot to explore in the Addams Family." That seems to suggest that an offshoot, whether a limited series or another full-on series, could focus on another member of Wednesday's family, perhaps one of her eccentric extended family members or even her little brother Pugsley.
Since the renewal news is still so fresh, Netflix hasn't indicted what's in store for Wednesday season 3, such as how many episodes there will be, when the season could realistically make its premiere, or even if this will be the final season. More than likely, we can assume that the third season will again contain eight episodes and that the early renewal will allow for the team to begin writing and filming much quicker than last time. (Season 2 also had to contend with the writers' and actors' strikes.)
As for whether Wednesday season 3 will be the final season, The Hollywood Reporter interview and profile on Ortega suggested that she's "eager to explore other projects," which could mean that the hit Netflix original series' days are numbered. But we shouldn't be too worried yet, as the show's far too popular right now for any rash decisions to be made.
Still, it's exciting that it's already been confirmed that we have another season of Wednesday to look forward to and that Netflix has been exploring options to remain in the show's universe. It's not surprising that a spinoff is in the works, since this is a show, and piece of IP, that perfectly lends itself to prequels, sequels, spinoffs, and the like. Beyond season 2, the best is still yet to come!
Wednesday season 2 releases on Aug. 6 and Sept. 3 on Netflix.
