With new TV shows premiering all the time, sometimes great ones slip through the cracks. Fortunately, we're in the world of streaming where forgotten gems can find new life and reach audiences around the globe, giving them the recognition they truly deserve. This August, Netflix is set to bring back one such underrated sci-fi gem starring Halle Berry, offering both longtime fans and new viewers a chance to immerse themselves in its thrilling tale once again or for the very first time.
According to What's On Netflix, the streaming giant has acquired the streaming rights to the short-lived CBS series Extant. Both seasons of the sci-fi thriller will reportedly be added to Netflix’s library on Aug. 18, 2025. Given that it is a licensed title, the show will only be available for a limited time on the streaming platform. A departure date was not given, but we strongly encourage those to watch it as soon as possible to avoid missing out on this overlooked series.
Extant was created by Mickey Fisher (Mars, Reverie) and executive produced by Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans, West Side Story). It originally aired on CBS from 2014 to 2015 and ran for two seasons (26 episodes total) before being canceled. Its unfortunate cancellation was due to declining ratings, despite strong performances and a dedicated fan base.
Berry starred as the lead character, Molly Woods, an astronaut who returns home from a solo mission in space to discover she’s mysteriously pregnant despite being alone for 13 months and previously struggling with infertility. Besides her role in this series, Berry is known for her previous role as Debbie Porter in the CBS soap opera Knots Landing. However, she's really known for her movie career, particularly her Oscar-winning performance in Monster’s Ball and her iconic roles in blockbuster films like X-Men, Die Another Day and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.
She was joined in the Extant cast by many other talented actors, including Goran Visnjic, Pierce Gagnon, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Hiroyuki Sanada, Camryn Manheim, Grace Gummer, and Michael O'Neill.
Once Extant joins Netflix's library, it will sit alongside other Halle Berry titles already available on the platform, including the action thriller The Union and the sports drama Bruised. If you can't wait until the sci-fi series drops on Netflix, you have the option to stream it on Paramount+. That's its true streaming home, and it is expected to remain on that platform even after it's added to Netflix. You can also purchase individual episodes or seasons through digital retailers. It's up to you.
