We're about to enter a new month, and while there's much to be excited about when it comes to Netflix's new releases, there's also the inevitable downside of the streaming giant refreshing its lineup. With every batch of new releases comes a wave of goodbyes, and this time, one retro sci-fi gem is set to blast off the platform in just a few days.
Dune is leaving Netflix in October 2025
Don't get this movie confused with the 2021 version that stars Timothée Chalamet. That film was streaming on Netflix for a while before being removed from the streamer in January 2025. We're referring to the original 1984 adaptation from David Lynch. Unfortunately, this epic space opera film will be leaving Netflix on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025. This means the last day to watch the movie on the streaming platform is Tuesday, Sept. 30. 2025.
Netflix even put the removal notice on the movie's title page to warn its subscribers. With it being Sept. 29, that doesn't give you much time to catch this cult classic before it disappears. So, if you’ve been meaning to rewatch it or see it for the first time, now is the perfect moment to press play. There's no telling if it'll ever make its way back to Netflix in the future.
We knew Dune would eventually depart the streamer because it's licensed content. In other words, Netflix doesn’t own the rights outright, and once the distribution deal expires, the film has to return to its original studio or move to another streaming service. It appears that the licensing deal was set for four months since Dune landed on Netflix back in June 2025, and it's about to depart this October.
With its upcoming departure, Netflix will no longer carry any of the Dune movies. Besides the 2021 film adaptation, the streaming giant also carried its sequel (Dune: Part Two) until July 2025. Perhaps the upcoming Dune: Part Three will eventually make its way to Netflix sometime after its theatrical release, but there’s no guarantee or official confirmation yet.
What is Dune (1984) about?
Written and directed by Lynch, Dune is based on the groundbreaking 1965 science fiction novel of the same name by Frank Herbert. The story centers around Paul Atreides, a young noble whose family is assigned to govern the desert planet Arrakis, the universe’s only source of the valuable spice melange. After a deadly betrayal by rival forces, Paul must survive in the harsh desert, align with the native Fremen, and embrace his destiny as a potential messianic figure who could change the fate of the galaxy.
Golden Globe Award-winning actor Kyle MacLachlan stars in the leading role as Paul. Also in the cast are Francesca Annis, Leonardo Cimino, Brad Dourif, José Ferrer, Linda Hunt, Freddie Jones, Richard Jordan, Virginia Madsen, Silvana Mangano, Everett McGill, Kenneth McMillan, Jack Nance, and so many others.
It's unknown if Dune will be available to stream on another streaming platform after it leaves Netflix. However, it will still be available to rent or purchase on digital platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, and Fandango at Home.
