Later this year, HBO will premiere A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a new Game of Thrones prequel series. This one is based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas by George R.R. Martin, about a knight named Dunk and his precocious squire, Egg. It's set decades after the events of House of the Dragon but decades before Game of Thrones, and has an altogether lighter tone than either of those stories.
Martin has written three Dunk and Egg tales so far, all of which are collected in a book called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The first season of the show will adapt the first book; it will have only six episodes and will air on HBO and Max later this year. We don't know exactly when that will be, but the consensus seems to be that it will be out in the back half of 2025. Now we have a new clue thanks to Los Siete Reinos, which reports on a Spanish edition of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms coming out on June 19 under the Plaza y Janés imprint from Penguin Random House.
There have always been a lot of passionate Game of Thrones fans in Spain; the original series shot a ton of material there, with cities like Girona standing in for both King's Landing and Braavos. This new edition of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will probably sell well there.
It would also be a great way to prime audiences for the TV adaptation, which means that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms — the TV series — almost certainly won't premiere until after June 19, in any territory.
That still leaves five months and change in the rest of the year. Odds are that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will come out sometime in the fall, whisking us back to Westeros just as the weather starts to get cool.
Then, in 2026, HBO will air the third season of House of the Dragon. If all goes according to plan, we'll get more seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms sometime after that. Perhaps they'll get into a rotation where we get one season of a Westeros show every year.
