There's lots of movement on the superhero front lately. First up: Warner Bros. Discovery has shown off new footage from Superman, its reboot of the iconic franchise starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. In a new clip, Superman crashes into a snowy expanses, beaten and battered, to summon his dog Krypto for help. Hilariously (or disturbingly, I haven't decided), the dog is being way too playful with the wounded superhero. Watch below:
What could have done that to the Man of Steel? We'll find out when Superman comes out in theaters on July 11.
Just a couple of weeks later, on July 25, Marvel will release Fantastic Four: First Steps, a reboot of an entirely different superhero franchise. This one stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Mister Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch and the Thing respectively. New pics and posters have been floating around:

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney showed off some new footage at CinemaCon, including footage of Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer, but they haven't released that to the public yet. “This is very much about the spirit of the Space Race,” director Matt Shakman told Empire. “It's about JFK and optimism. It’s imagining these four going into space instead of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. This idea is that they are the most famous people in America, because they’re adventurers, explorers, astronauts — not because they're superheroes. And they come back and they're superheroes on top of it. But primarily they're astronauts, they're family.”
Marvel vs DC, Part II
These movies aren't coming out the same week, but they are coming out the same month, and they both have a lot to prove. The DC Cinematic Universe has been famously rocky, with Superman poised to reset the whole thing. Depending on how it does, it could launch a whole new cinematic universe...or be a one-and-done flop that signals the end of DC movies starring anyone other than Batman.
The stakes aren't quite as high for Marvel, but the MCU isn't what it was; hype has died down, and Disney wants to inject some fresh blood to liven things up. Fantastic Four: First Steps is set in the '60s, which helps set it apart from its many, many predecessors. "There's really no [other] superheroes. There's no Easter eggs. There's no running into Iron Man or whatever," Shakman said. "They're it, in this universe. I love the interconnected Marvel Universe, but we get to do something so new and so different. Eventually this world will meet up with other worlds — but for now this is our own little corner.”
In that way, this movie also feels like a bit of a reset. Both movies feel like they have their own styles, with Fantastic Four going for a retro-futurist feel and Superman embracing the lighter side of the Man of Steel in a way not many movies have done before. I think they both look pretty good. We'll find out if they can reignite interest in the superhero movie boom this summer.
