Could 2026 finally be the year Game of Thrones fans get The Winds of Winter news they’ve been desperately hoping to hear for over a decade? Well, the jury is still out, but fans are convinced that a cryptic post about an upcoming limited edition release of George R.R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones may have casually hinted that The Winds of Winter news is forthcoming.
On June 11, London-based publisher The Folio Society took to social media to share an exciting new update about its upcoming limited edition copy of A Game of Thrones.
“A closer look at the spectacular clamshell box for our upcoming Limited Edition of A Game of Thrones, publishing 14 July. Crafted by some of the finest artisans in bookmaking, it is a fitting home for George R. R. Martin’s unforgettable tale of the Seven Kingdoms,” read the Instagram post, which debuted a look at the breathtaking clamshell box that will accompany the dragon-leather-bound copy of the book that launched the Game of Thrones franchise.
Interestingly, the promotional message did not stop there, though. The post about the limited edition copy of Martin’s iconic work concluded with a cryptic message that has sent fans into a frenzy.
“But one secret remains. Keep your eyes on the skies… another message is on its way,” The Folio Society teased. Needless to say, this tease quickly caught the attention of fans who are convinced that the secret is connected to The Winds of Winter.
“WINDS OF WINTER ARE COMING THAT’S RIGHT,” proclaimed one convinced fan, who was not at all alone in jumping to the conclusion that the secret is connected to Martin’s long-in-development book. Countless fans began speculating about whether the secret could indeed be The Winds of Winter-related, with fan speculation spreading like wildfire.
“I swear to god if this isn’t about Winds of Winter, I’m crashing tf out,” remarked one fan on X. “Am I delusional enough to still have hope for Winds of Winter? Yes… Yes I am…” joked another user on the platform after catching wind of The Folio Society’s post.
Many fans tried to keep their expectations at bay, or as one fan wrote, “really trying to not go completely delusional over that last part.” It was a sentiment shared by many users who know all too well how many times they’ve gotten their hopes up about a potential Winds of Winter update only to be disappointed in the end.
“Give me that ‘fell for it again award’ because I am getting increasingly convinced this year we will get The Winds of Winter,” joked one fan who knows all too well how long this roller coaster ride with Martin has been.
While many fans are convinced that Winds of Winter news could be coming and could be the secret The Folio Society hinted at, other fans aren’t buying into the fan theory. In fact, there are many fans feeling sympathetic for the publisher for getting caught in the center of the fan theory.
“I feel bad for the Folio Society, because I think their post pretty clearly doesn’t have anything to do with The Winds of Winter,” wrote one user on X.
To be honest, this user is likely correct. While it is fun to theorize and hope that The Folio Society’s big secret might be connected to The Winds of Winter, the reality is that news of that magnitude would likely come directly from Martin himself or from Penguin Random House, who are the primary publishers for the Game of Thrones novels. That’s not to say there isn’t a small possibility that perhaps the A Game of Thrones limited edition release from The Folio Society won’t include a connection to The Winds of Winter, such as an excerpt from the book; it’s just highly unlikely.
While fans aren’t likely going to get any form of Winds of Winter-related update with this limited edition release, the 30th anniversary collector’s item will feature an exclusive introduction by Joe Abercrombie and elite artistry that includes the dragon leather binding, clamshell box, and a limitation label blocked in real gold – plus every copy will be signed by Martin.
With a hefty price tag of £1,500, this limited edition release won’t come cheap, and we have to admit the inclusion of an excerpt from The Winds of Winter would most certainly make that price tag feel justified. After waiting over 15 years for the book, there is no doubt fans would happily open their checkbooks for this limited edition piece if it meant getting to own a part of the unpublished sixth book in the series!
