Video game fans were cautiously optimistic about Sony's latest State of Play presentation. After all, it was announced with two weeks' notice, it was screened in select theaters, and it even had its own official countdown page. Now, we know what all the excitement was about.

Sony Santa Monica and PlayStation have officially announced God of War Laufey, an upcoming PlayStation 5 game that shines the spotlight on Faye, Kratos' late wife, whose death was the catalyst for the events of the 2018 game.

The franchise already had a bright future ahead thanks to the upcoming Amazon Prime Video show, set to star Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus. However, this new title will expand the saga even further by letting players explore a realm that has remained hidden until now: a plane of existence to which gods go after they die.

God of War Laufey will follow Faye as she explores the afterlife

The latest State of Play culminated with a deep dive into God of War Laufey. During the presentation, fans got to witness the opening 20 minutes of the game, which kicks things off with Kratos and Atreus burning Faye's body, only for her spirit to appear in a strange land called the Everywhen. However, there will be many risks in store, as revealed by a new post on the PlayStation Blog:

"Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her funeral, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now at risk."

Deborah Ann Woll recently took over the TV world thanks to her role as Karen Page in Daredevil: Born Again season 2. Now, she will reprise her role as Faye, a Giant of Jötunheim who was the subject of many legendary stories in the previous two God of War games. Players would often hear that she was able to defeat warriors like Thor in combat, and now we can see why that was the case.

Faye's combat has a lot of verticality to it, unlike Kratos' in previous entries of the saga. Players will be able to send enemies flying into the air and seamlessly jump toward them to keep the combo of hits going. Laufey will also be able to parry and dodge attacks, and it seems the use of magic will be a big part of her set of abilities.

"Faye has always been a formidable warrior in our story. She and Kratos can both hit hard and take hits, so one of our top priorities throughout the development has been handcrafting a uniquely fresh feel for Faye’s gameplay that will also meet the high expectations fans have for the series."

While she once wielded the Leviathan Axe, Laufey will now use a talking sword called Rue as her main weapon, which will be voiced by Perlina Lau. Additionally, players will meet a cosmic cube called Phranque, who will aid Faye in her journey. This new companion will be played by Jack Quaid, who brought Hughie Campbell to life in The Boys TV series.

"As the previous owner of the Leviathan Axe, Faye is no stranger to legendary weapons. Upon her arrival in the Everywhen, she earns the trust of the sword’s guardian Rue enough to use the blade in their fight to escape imprisonment."

Perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects of God of War Laufey is that players will explore a realm filled with gods who perished in battle. That means the doors are open for the return of key villains from the original God of War trilogy, such as Zeus or Ares.

"The Everywhen is the birthplace and endpoint to which all magic returns, a transcendent realm above those we’ve come to know. A location in which gods and creatures from different mythologies come together, and not always in harmonious coexistence."

Unfortunately, a release date for God of War Laufey wasn't announced. However, the Summer Game Fest week is just starting, and there's a chance that Sony will promote its upcoming title during the main show on Friday, June 5. With a bit of luck, we'll get a release window there.

God of War Laufey will be released on PlayStation 5 consoles and is available for wishlist now.
