On February 21, 2005, Nickelodeon aired the first episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender, an original animated series about a kid named Aang with the power to control all four elements — earth, air, fire and water — and who had to use that power to bring an end to a brutal war. The series ended in triumph three years later, with sequels and remakes coming out in the years to follow. Now, almost 20 years to the day after the original show first aired, a new sequel show has been announced: Avatar: Seven Havens.
The original Last Airbender show followed Aang as he tried to make peace between the Fire, Water, Earth and Air nations. The sequel series of The Legend of Korra picked up with the Avatar who came after Aang; in Korra's time, the people of the four nations were all mixing in Republic City. Seven Havens will pick up a young Earthbender who "discovers she’s the new Avatar after Korra," according to the official description. "[B]ut in this dangerous era, that title marks her as humanity’s destroyer, not its savior. Hunted by both human and spirit enemies, she and her long-lost twin must uncover their mysterious origins and save the Seven Havens before civilization’s last strongholds collapse.”
The official description also says that the show is “set in a world shattered by a devastating cataclysm." Apparently it's something that happened during Korra's time that resulted in the four nations splitting apart into the seven "havens" of the title. Korra, what did you do?
The show will be overseen by Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, who created the first series. “When we created the original series, we never imagined we’d still be expanding the world decades later,” they said in a joint statement," per The Hollywood Reporter. “This new incarnation of the Avatarverse is full of fantasy, mystery, and a whole new cast of amazing characters. Get ready to take another epic and emotional adventure!”
Nickelodeon has ordered 26 episodes of Avatar: Seven Havens, to be divided into two "books" of 13 episodes each. So that means we're getting two seasons, at least. We don't have a premiere date yet, nor do we know about casting.
But we do know that Nickelodeon will be launching two new series on the Avatar: The Last Airbender channel YouTube channel, add new content to the Avatar Legends YouTube channel, launch the Avatar: The Last Airbender in Concert tour, and is planning something big for this year's San Diego Comic-Con. And let's not forget that they're working on an animated movie about a grown-up Aang to debut on January 20, 2026.
Remember that Nickelodeon is owned by Paramount Global, so I'd expect for the show to stream eventually on Paramount+. Anyway, while the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender has always been popular, this explosion of content is crazy. And none of it has anything to do with the live-action Last Airbender remake series currently airing on Netflix; that one aired its first season last year and has two more to go. DiMartino and Konietzko aren't involved with the Netflix show, but are overseeing all of these animated endeavors.
