After nearly a full year of leaving fans hanging, Netflix confirmed details about the highly anticipated Stranger Things prequel on Stranger Things Day 2026!
Netflix shared a short teaser for Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure on social media and revealed the prequel from the Duffer Brothers and Kate Trefry will hit Netflix sometime in 2028. As for what the Stranger Things prequel will be about, well, it's exactly what everyone thought it would be.
Before Hawkins, there was Marion.

According to Netflix, Other Worlds takes place in Marion, Nevada, starting on April 19, 1955. We don't know exactly what it will be about, but it's set in the 1950s "before Stranger Things and before the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow."
No cast or other story information was announced.

The Stranger Things prequel will probably tell Henry Creel's story
Now that we know when Other Worlds takes place, it's easy to connect the dots to the rest of the Stranger Things story. It seems likely that this story will continue to expand on Henry Creel's backstory.
Remember, in Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the stageplay, and in the Stranger Things 5 finale, we see Henry kill a scientist in some caves in Nevada when he's infected by the Mind Flayer through the space rock. That happened in 1955, the same year that Other Worlds is set.
At the time, Henry, who was born in 1947, would have been eight years old when he entered the caves near Rachel, Nevada, where Henry grew up before his family moved to Hawkins in 1959. So, we'll probably see exactly what happens in Nevada before Henry's family moves to Hawkins.
Of course, this was the most logical path for the prequel to follow. We learned during Stranger Things 5 that the prequel had something to do with the rock in the cave that caused Henry to become one with the Mind Flayer.
We also know that Dr. Brenner's father led an expedition into other worlds, which was called the Nevada Experiment, about a decade earlier. It seems likely that this exploration opened the door. How the Mind Flayer factors into it all, we don't know yet, but I feel like we're about to learn in two years.

Stranger Things needs a much more ambitious spinoff
Stranger Things was the most fun when the mystery had yet to be solved. Then, we learned that Henry Creel was Vecna, everything dated back to this incident in the cave, and the Mind Flayer was actually an alien monster from another dimension that was trying to fuse worlds through a wormhole. The show felt a lot less fun.
If anything, the next Stranger Things needed to go back to the show's roots: a group of kids trying to solve a supernatural mystery and save their friend. That's what this show was about at the start, and it stayed that way for the first few seasons.
Sure, there was always the backdrop of the Hawkins National Lab, Dr. Brenner's experiments on kids with powers, and the US vs. Russia relations and rivalry, but that was just good backstory. The more lore we learned, the less fun the show became.
That's the unfortunate part about all of this. Netflix had a chance to really try to recapture the magic of Stranger Things with a fresh story, but it seems like we're going to dive even deeper into the lore that didn't quite come together at the end of the series like we all wanted it to. This is also after we got an animated series that just didn't feel anything like the original series even though it's full of the same characters.
To me, Stranger Things never felt predictable until the very end, and that's one of the reasons the series connected with a lot of fans. It felt like a callback to the 1980s, but no one quite knew where the story was going to go within each season. That formula could have been replicated for a different time or a different supernatural event.
Is the Mind Flayer really responsible for everything? Is there no other supernatural evil or monster we can craft a story around? The Duffer brothers made something that felt fresh and unpredictable, so it doesn't make much sense to me to do the thing that everyone expected.
Maybe I'm just being pessimistic, but in a world that is absolutely jam-packed with prequels and sequels and spinoffs and reboots, it just feels like Netflix could have taken an even bigger swing with the next Stranger Things project instead of giving us "the story before the story."
Hopefully, I'm wrong! I know I'll be watching Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure when it premieres, but I just hope that we move away from Henry Creel in this universe at some point.
