Norman Reedus wraps The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4 — but is he done for good?

The fourth and final season of The Walking Dead spinoff Daryl Dixon has wrapped filming. And with no further projects in the franchise lined up for Norman Reedus, his journey as Daryl Dixon is over... well, at least for the foreseeable future.

Norman Reedus has played fan-favorite Daryl Dixon in The Walking Dead from the very beginning. In fact, he's made more appearances in the franchise than any other character. After over a decade in the main show, Reedus then embarked on a spinoff project, seeing Daryl embark on globe-trotting adventures to France, England, and Spain. By the end of season 3, Daryl and Carol found themselves stuck on the Spanish coast, despite their best efforts in getting back home to the United States.

The show's fouth season will continue to play out in Spain, where both Daryl and Carol have engrained themselves in a tight-knit community. The Spanish setting hit well with fans in season 3, which recieved hugely positive ratings. Critics praised its heavy spaghetti western vibes.

Whether Daryl ends his adventures in Spain, or returns to the United States, remains to be seen. But if one thing is for sure, it'll feel like a true sendoff for the character. Reedus himself teased as much in a recent tweet. "Last filming day today for daryl dixon," he wrote. "It’s been such a joy for me to play this guy with all of u for this long. I feel really blessed. Truly."

"Thank you all really from my heart," he added.

Now that certainly feels like a farewell post. I mean, it is a farewell for the spinoff, but it also echoes the idea that he may never return to play Daryl again. Fans appear to be feeling that way too, with the post racking up a massive 110K likes.

Will we ever see Norman Reedus play Daryl Dixon beyond Daryl Dixon season 4?

The Walking Dead markets itself as the zombie apocalypse that never ends. The franchise has been on our screens for 15 years now, and boss Scott Gimple is keen to reinforce time and time again that there's plenty more life left in the series. “It’s quite possible we could see this group up here 15 years from now,” he told Variety when the show hit 15 years on air.

As for Reedus himself, earlier this year he shared thoughts on the upcoming finale. "This finale isn’t just an ending; it’s a celebration of what we’ve all shared together," he told Variety earlier this year. "Keep carrying that love forward – Daryl’s journey is far from over.”

I'd be surprised if Reedus doesn't reprise his role as Daryl ever again. But if one thing is for certain, it sounds like it won't be anytime soon. As long as Daryl remains alive, there's always a chance...
