If you were a fan of Robert Eggers' 2024 horror film Nosferatu, then expect more gothic goodness on the way. Nexus Point News has revealed (and Variety has confirmed) new casting details about Eggers' next project Werewulf, which is looking like a spiritual successor to Nosferatu. Many of the same actors are in talks to return in this 13th-century horror piece.

Nosferatu was a remake of the classic 1922 vampire movie, which was itself a reskinned version of the novel Dracula, written by Bram Stoker. It's safe to say that Werewulf will not be a sequel of any kind. There's no cinematic universe in the making here. That said, going from vampires to werewolves is a lateral move, so there may at least be thematic similarities. Moreover, a bunch of the cast from Nosferatu will return, including Aaron Taylor-Johnson (who played Friedrich Harding in Nosferatu), Willem Dafoe (Professor Albin Eberhart von Franz), and Lily-Rose Depp (Ellen Hunter), altough the latter is only in talks.

Eggersr has established a reputation for making historically accurate horror films that blend the mundane with the morbid, blurring the lines between sanity and the supernatural. He's directed The Witch, The Lighthouse (which also starred William Dafoe), The Northman, and, of course, Nosferatu. He's famous for doing deep research into the periods he's depicting, and the dialogue sounds like it's spoken by peasants and nobles he resurrected from their tombs. That's partly due to help from Icelandic author Sjón, who co-wrote The Northman with Eggers. He's returning to work on Werewulf, which will reportedly feature Old English dialogue. That explains why it's spelled with a "u."

While we don't have any concrete details on the plot, we at least know that Aaron Taylor-Johnson is playing the werewolf. Lily Rose-Depp will reportedly play his wife. It's also said the film will have elements of witchcraft and gore unlike we've seen in Eggers' work before. With The Witch and The Northman as our point of reference, we can expect the fear factor to go up a notch.

Werewulf is due out in theaters on December 25, 2026. It's going to be a winter to remember.
