Severance is the most popular show on Apple TV+, recently eclipsing previous champion Ted Lasso. The second season just wrapped up with a banger of a finale that has left fans thirsty for more. And now, Apple has officially announced on Twitter/X that the show has been renewed for season 3.
There was little doubt of this happening. The show is great and people love it; of course it's going to get renewed. The one niggle was a recent report from The Information that claimed that Apple is losing a billion dollars a year on streaming; it's spent about $5 billion per year on Apple TV+ since the service started in 2019, although according to The A.V. Club they've decided to cut that down to a lean 4.5 billion dollars. Apparently, as of last summer, Apple TV+ accounted for just 2% of TV viewing in the U.S.
It's true that, for as big as Severance and Ted Lasso are, there are a ton of shows on Apple TV+ that it feels like no one watches. Did you know that Jason Momoa played a blind warrior chieftain named Baba Voss in an epic post-apocalyptic drama called See that ran for three seasons? And that's just the tip of the iceberg. How is this sustainable? Well, like Amazon with Prime Video, Apple's goal with its streaming service isn't just to produce good TV; it's also to shunt you to their other products, so it may be worth it behind the scenes.
The wait for Severance season 3 will be shorter than for season 2
In any case, the important thing is that Severance is renewed. Speaking on the New Heights podcast, producer Ben Stiller has promised that fans will "definitely not" have to wait another three years to watch season 3, which is how long they had to wait between seasons 1 and 2. I doubt we'll be seeing Severance season 3 in the immediate future, but 2028 seems like a good possibility, or maybe late 2027.
And there's a lot to follow up on. Lumon's plans are in disarray, the innies have taken control of the severed floor, and Mark S has stolen the body of his outie Mark Scout, so that he and his lover Helly R can enjoy what life they have while they have it. If you watched the show, you know what all of that means. If you don't, you have at least a year and change to catch up!
