From the start, House of the Dragon has been less of an epic fantasy saga and more of a Shakespearean tragedy set in Westeros. The Dance of the Dragons civil war is the single most vicious conflict in the history of the Seven Kingdoms, when rival branches of House Targaryen tear the realm asunder — and practically wipe out the dragons, the key to their power, in the process. The show has taken its time to get into the meat of the war, but there's no way to delay it any longer. Things are about to get bloody.
The House of the Dragon cast was on hand at the season 3 world premiere in London on Monday, June 8, and a cornucopia of soundbites and interesting interviews have hit the Internet in the hours following. That includes a particularly juicy tease from Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower), who was asked to sum up the upcoming season in three words that would make more sense after people had watched. Her choice? "Lock your windows."

Cooke is indeed right that these words will make much more sense for viewers once the season is out, and I feel comfortable saying that because readers of George R.R. Martin's novel Fire & Blood can probably guess what she's talking about with a fair level of confidence. After all, there is only one key event in this portion of the book that deals with Alicent, a window, and the sort of shocking turn that the Game of Thrones franchise is known for. And this all but confirms it's coming in season 3.
To discuss it, we need to get into MAJOR SPOILERS for Fire & Blood and House of the Dragon season 3. A trigger warning is also required. You have been warned.

The Red Keep will become a place of despair for Alicent Hightower
One important event we know is coming early in season 3 is that Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) will finally seize King's Landing and claim the Iron Throne. This serves as the mid-way point of the Dance, and it shifts the paradigm in major ways for basically every character involved in the war. That's extremely true for Alicent Hightower, who ends up becoming Rhaenyra's prisoner at the Red Keep for the duration of the Black Queen's rule over the capital. Alicent's daughter, Helaena Targaryen (Phia Saban) is taken captive along with her.
In the book, Rhaenyra and Alicent have much more animosity than in the show, but even still, I'm not expecting Alicent's captivity to be an easy experience for the queen dowager. While she's held in the Red Keep, the war goes on around her, and many people she cares about suffer terrible fates that she's helpless to stop.
Nowhere does that hit closer to home than with Helaena Targaryen, who takes her own life during their captivity. It's strongly hinted in the book that Helaena is told of the horrific demise of her youngest son, Maelor Targaryen, who was torn apart by a mob at the town of Bitterbridge while trying to avoid Rhaenyra's notice with the Kingsguard knight Ser Rickard Thorne. This tragedy compounds with Helaena's earlier trauma over the Blood and Cheese incident, where her older son Jaehaerys was brutally murdered in front of her. Ultimately overcome by grief and madness, she hurls herself from a tower of the Red Keep to her death.
This terrible tragedy is perhaps the single worst thing that Alicent Hightower endures. It also has far-reaching consequences on the populace of King's Landing, who loved the gentle Queen Helaena, and the Dance of the Dragons as a whole.
Cooke's three words all but confirm Helaena's demise is imminent in House of the Dragon season 3. However, the exact circumstances surrounding it remain an open question, because the show has thus far omitted Maelor from the series. Regardless, there's little doubt it's coming, even if the road to get there is a little different.

Technically, this isn't the first time we've gotten confirmation that Helaena's death is going to be in season 3; back in 2024 when George R.R. Martin first published a blog post detailing some of his many issues with House of the Dragon season 2, he took particular aim at "Maelor the Missing," and how his absence would have a ripple effect on Helaena's death as well. As Martin discussed this problem with showrunner Ryan Condal's plan for the third season, he confirmed Helaena's suicide would appear in season 3:
"In Ryan’s outline for season 3, Helaena still kills herself… for no particular reason," he wrote. "There is no fresh horror, no triggering event to overwhelm the fragile young queen."
"Maelor by himself means little. He is a small child, does not have a line of dialogue, does nothing of consequence but die… but where and when and how, that does matter," Martin continued. "Losing Maelor weakened the end of the Blood and Cheese sequence, but it also cost us the Bitterbridge scene with all its horror and heroism, it undercut the motivation for Helaena’s suicide, and that in turn sent thousands into the streets and alleys, screaming for justice for their “murdered” queen. None of that is essential, I suppose… but all of it does serve a purpose, it all helps to tie the story lines together, so one thing follows another in a logical and convincing manner."
Between Martin's blog post and Cooke's cryptic words, we can say with some certainty that Helaena is going to meet her demise in House of the Dragon season 3. What remains to be seen is whether the show will include the idea of her son Maelor at all in that equation, or find some other way to tip Helaena over the edge. There is a glimpse in one of the trailers of Helaena seemingly in child birth, so it's not impossible that the show could still bring Maelor into the series in some fashion at this late hour. But either way, dark days lie ahead for Helaena Targaryen and Alicent Hightower.
House of the Dragon season 3 premieres June 21 on HBO and HBO Max.
