There is no denying that 2026 is a massive year for sci-fi and fantasy fans. Already this year we’ve seen the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms expand the world of Game of Thrones to rave reviews and watched Project Hail Mary break out on the big screen to become Amazon MGM Studios’ biggest theatrical release ever.

The months ahead will bring fans even more amazing titles ranging from new seasons of hits such as House of the Dragon, The Witcher, and Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power; and incredible must-see films such as The Mandalorian and Grogu, He-Man, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, and Dune: Part 3. There will be no shortage of amazing fantasy and sci-fi offerings coming in the months, but sadly one of the biggest fantasy releases of the year has officially been delayed to 2027.

Netflix pushes Greta Gerwig’s Narnia movie back to 2027

In a shocking move, Netflix has announced the Greta Gerwig-directed Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will no longer be hitting theaters Thanksgiving weekend and releasing on Christmas Day 2026. Rather than releasing the film in late 2026 around the holidays as originally planned, Netflix has decided to push the film’s theatrical release to February 12, 2027, and its Netflix release to April 2, 2027.

Now, the disappointing part of this update is that we’re going to have to wait a few more months for the highly anticipated film, but there is some good news. Part of the reason Netflix is delaying the film’s release is so that it can give the movie a full theatrical release rather than a limited two-week theatrical run as was originally planned.

“The film’s delay until 2027 creates an opportunity to give The Magician’s Nephew an expanded, wide release with a full theatrical window; we support Greta and Netflix in pursuing that opportunity and are pleased IMAX could help facilitate,” said IMAX in a statement.

Initially, the plan was for The Magician’s Nephew to open in theaters and enjoy a limited two-week run. Now, it is expected that the film will get a wide theatrical release and remain in theaters for multiple weeks.

This will give the fans the chance to experience the film in all its glory in theaters and marks a major move for Netflix, which has traditionally avoided more standard theatrical releases. This also will put the film up against much softer competition rather than it opening opposite Disney’s Hexed and the Ariana Grande-led Fockers-in-Law, as well as The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which opens the week prior but is expected to enjoy a strong second weekend timed to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will adapt the sixth book in C. S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia series, which explores the creation of Narnia. The film features an all-star cast including Emma Mackey as the White Witch, Carey Mulligan as Mable Kirke, Meryl Streep voicing Aslan, and Daniel Craig playing the uncle. The cast also includes David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell.
