Original Harry Potter director Chris Columbus shares optimism for new TV series

He's also all in on the idea of Cillian Murphy playing Voldemort, unlikely as that seems.

Chris Columbus, the director who set the tone for the Harry Potter film franchise with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, has given a glowing endorsement to HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television adaptation. Speaking to PEOPLE, Columbus called the project "a spectacular idea" and highlighted the unique opportunities a serialized format offers compared to feature films.

"Our film was two hours and 40 minutes, and the second one was almost as long," Columbus reflected. "We tried to get as much of the book in as possible, but there’s a certain restriction when you’re making a film." He emphasized that with the TV series, there’s “the leisure of multiple episodes for each book,” allowing for the inclusion of scenes and details that couldn’t make it into the original films.

This new series marks the first time Harry Potter’s adventures will be adapted for the small screen, despite the franchise's expansion into films, stage productions, video games, and theme park attractions. Original Harry Potter movie stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint are not expected to reprise their roles, but original author J.K. Rowling is actively involved in the creative process.

Despite ongoing controversy surrounding Rowling’s public statements, HBO and Max CEO Casey Bloys confirmed her significant involvement in the series. Bloys noted that Rowling helped select the showrunner and director and is likely to have input on casting decisions.

Original Harry Potter director supports Cillian Murphy fancast as Voldemort

Casting rumors have already sparked excitement, with fan favorites like Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy floated as a potential Voldemort. Columbus himself expressed enthusiasm for this suggestion, saying, "Cillian is one of my favorite actors, so that would be amazing." Ralph Fiennes, who portrayed the Dark Lord in the original films, agreed, calling Murphy "a fantastic actor" and voicing his support for the idea. Meanwhile, casting possibilities for Hagrid, Snape and Dumbledore have all been floated.

The Harry Potter TV series is shaping up under the guidance of Succession director Mark Mylod, who will serve as executive producer and direct some episodes. Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on His Dark Materials, is the showrunner and lead writer. A casting call has already gone out for U.K.- and Ireland-based children between 9 and 11 to fill the iconic roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

While Columbus isn’t directly involved, his optimism speaks to the enduring appeal of Rowling’s magical world. "I look forward to seeing what they’re trying to do with it," he said. "I think it’s great."
As fans like me await this reimagined take on our long cherished series, Columbus’ endorsement is a strong reminder of the franchise's potential to captivate new and returning audiences alike.
