Game of Thrones may have completely taken over the kingdoms of literature and TV, but the cold, northern lands under the video-game banners are mostly uncharted territory for the franchise. There have been only a handful of games based on George R. R. Martin's iconic novels, and aside from Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series, all of them have been released to mixed to negative reviews. Fans are counting the days until a new title does the saga justice, and perhaps we won't have to wait too long now, as a new challenger rapidly approaches.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is a real-time strategy game set in the ruthless world of Westeros. While it isn't exactly the AAA action-adventure installment many have been asking for, it does give us the chance to completely rewrite the history of the Seven Kingdoms and decide who will be the one sitting on the Iron Throne once the war for the crown comes to an end. Better yet, we finally have a small glimpse of what to expect when the game launches on PC in 2027.
New footage for Game of Thrones: War for Westeros was unveiled at Gamescom 2026
Gamescom Opening Night Live had plenty of surprises for video game players, from the first look at The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past all the way to the reveal of a new Dungeons & Dragons RPG titled Warlock. However, one of the biggest surprises was the gameplay reveal for Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, which is being developed by PlaySide Studios.
Players will be able to choose among House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, and even the White Walkers to use as their main faction to wage war across the Seven Kingdoms. Each house has different "signature heroes, armies, and mechanics" based on how it is depicted in George R. R. Martin's novels. For example, House Stark will be able to recruit Giants who will be able to defeat multiple human soldiers with a single blow. But as a Targaryen, you'll be able to ride a dragon into battle and burn everyone in your path.
Robb Stark, Jon Snow, Ghost, Grey Wind, Jaime Lannister, Tywin Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, and the Night King will be playable characters with their unique abilities that could turn the tide of the war in your favor.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros features a solo campaign as well as a multiplayer mode in which you'll be able to engage in skirmishes and "deploy infantry, cavalry, siege engines, giants, and dragons to break enemy lines and hold your own." Furthermore, players will be able to explore many iconic locations from the world of Game of Thrones along the way, as revealed by developer PlaySide Studios:
"Skirmish battles will take you across the regions of Westeros, from iconic locations like King’s Landing and The Wall, to battlefields inspired by the many kingdoms, castles, and contested lands within the continent. Each map is being built to offer its own visual identity, terrain layout, and strategic challenges, while supporting the large-scale army movement and territory control at the heart of Skirmish."
There will be a playable beta for Game of Thrones: War for Westeros before the game's full release in early 2027. Originally, PlaySide Studios' upcoming title was meant to hit shelves in 2026, but it was delayed to ensure it reaches a high level of quality. Fortunately, only a few months stand between us and 2027, so it won't be long before we finally get to rewrite history and ensure Bran Stark isn't the one to reign when all is said and done.
