Hard as it is to believe, there's only one season of Outlander left to watch. Seven seasons and 10 years in, the Starz show has become an institution, and star Caitriona Balfe assures us that the final season was a challenge to make. "It was such an emotional season to film," she told The Irish Star. "There were so many goodbyes to places and people that we loved and that we've loved for so long. I just really hope that it's a satisfying tribute to our fans, because we would never have been on air for that long without them."
Outlander is based on the book series of the same name by Diana Gabaldon, about a World War II-era nurse who is transported back in time to the 18th century where she falls in love with a dashing Scottish highlander named Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Seven seasons later, they're grandparents who are still very much in love. If you want to know what's in store for the pair, you can always read the books.
That said, it's possible that the show will swerve a little bit. Balfe certainly isn't giving anything away. "I don't know what I can say, or somebody swoops in and kills me," she joked.
She was able to share a couple things, if vaguely: "I think that we see more of the relationships, maybe," Balfe said. "There's a lot of loose ends that get sort of tied up, and I hope that those are kind of satisfying conclusions for people."
There are indeed some loose ends to tie up. In the season 7 finale, Jamie and Claire discovered reason to believe that their daughter Hope, whom they'd thought stillborn, had somehow survived, grown up, had children of her own, and died for real. That alone sounds like it could provide for a good season of TV.
Anyway, the eighth and final season of Outlander will air on Starz sometime in 2026. In the meanwhile, Starz will air the first season of a new spinoff, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, sometimes this summer. That show will follow the love stories between Jamie and Claire's separate sets of parents, falling in love with each other centuries apart. As for Balfe, you can currently see her in the spy thriller The Amateur, where Rami Malek plays a technical support guy turned angel of deadly vengeance.
