For a while now, we've been previewing a new Game of Thrones video game called Game of Thrones: Kingsroad. It takes place during the fourth season of the show and casts players in the role of the heir to House Tyre, a small house in the North. They will battle enemies, wheel and deal with familiar characters from the series, and explore the open world that is the Seven Kingdoms. And that's just in the story-driven single-player mode. There's also a multiplayer mode where you can play with friends and go up against ice spiders big as hounds, and other beasties.
The game looks like the most full-featured Game of Thrones video game yet produced. The only thing that gives us pause is that it's coming out for mobile devices (and PC), which carry a bit of a stigma for being simple and full of microtranactions. But the game itself looks really solid.
Game of Thrones: Kingsroad still doesn't have a release date, although it's supposed to come out sometime in the second quarter of this year. A demo for the game is now available on Steam. However, according to Los Siete Reinos, the demo will only be available through Monday, March 3, so it'll be for a week. If you want to see if Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is all it's cracked up to be, now's your chance!
There have been Game of Thrones video games before, most notably the story-heavy, choose-your-own-adventure style games from Telltale, which came out when the show was airing.
There have also been a few Game of Thrones strategy games, mostly available for mobile devices, that have never quite blown up. Game of Thrones: Kingsroad looks more robust than those games, and I'm hoping it can overcome the mobile stigma and become something worth the time. We'll see soon enough.
