10 best The Last Kingdom characters not named Uhtred
By Joel Wagler
No 1: Hild (Eva Birthistle)
The biggest argument against Hild being this high is that she should have been on the show more than she was, She was a featured character in a couple of the early seasons, but faded into the background as the series progressed, appearing in only 17 episodes.
Still, she was an impactful and important character that goes through some wild changes. We first meet her as a young nun who is being raped by a pillaging Dane. She is rescued by, of course, Uhtred. He takes her under his protection and she becomes one of his posse. She feels safe around our hero and his men. She becomes Uhtred's friend, not his lover.
What makes her character so interesting is she becomes a warrior nun, joining Uhtred in battles and plots. She is vicious in battle as she takes out her vengeance on all Danes for the act of one.
As time passes, her fury wears away, leaving her empty and questioning her lifestyle as a warrior. When Uhtred kills a priest in a church, some might argue rightfully, she begins to question what she is doing. Finally, she decides to lay down her sword and return fully to the church.
Uhtred, as should be expected, understands, and even helps her by establishing an abbey for her on his lands. They remain close friends. Like the other religious figures in Uhtred's life — namely Fathers Beocca and Prylig, who just missed this list — she doesn't try to convert him back to Christianity because she knows he has a good heart. She truly understood all of the goodness in Uhtred, would often tease him, and was never afraid to tell him the truth when he needed to hear.
She plays a key role in the eventual retaking of Bebbanburgh at the end of the series, and it was good to bring her back into the story, as her time on The Last Kingdom was too brief.
This show had so many memorable, well-written, well-acted characters, it was hard to pick only 10. The people in this group all offered different things to the story and set themselves apart. None were as great as Uhtred, and none as perfectly cast as Alexander Dreymon, but it was still an amazing cast.
