28 Days Later took the world by storm when it hit cinemas in 2002, reinventing the zombie genre with it's terrifying fast army of the undead and paving the way for other zombie franchises like The Walking Dead and World War Z. The movie got a sequel, 28 Weeks Later, in 2007, but creator Danny Boyle never pursued a third movie... until recently.

The sequel, titled 28 Years Later, has been teetering through various stages of development for many years now. But it was only recently that things seemed to start moving forward rapidly. We previously learned that the upcoming movie will kick off a completely new trilogy. Plus, Danny Boyle is back to direct, with Alex Garland also returning to pen the script. According to The Guardian, the movie will have a budget of $75m, almost 10 times the amount of the original picture!

And now we have new casting announcements. Per Variety, the movie has cast three Hollywood superstars: Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Bullet Train, The Fall Guy), Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), and Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter). Currently, we don't know whether Cillian Murphy will reprise his role from the original movie, but he is confirmed to be working on the new film as an executive producer.

Murphy has previously expressed his intent to work with Boyle and Garland again. "I would be there in a flash," he told the Independent. "I made two movies with both of those guys, and I would love to work with them again. Of course, I'm there.”

Plot details for 28 Years Later are still under wraps. The ending of the previous movie teased a future installment, with the Rage virus spreading across Europe. In the final scene, we see infected sprinting around the grounds of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Whether 28 Years Later will continue exploring this setup remains to be seen. We'll be watching regardless!
