3 Body Problem creator has "strong idea" about what season 2 would be

3 Body Problem is an excellent new sci-fi series on Netflix about what happens when humanity makes its first contact with an extraterrestrial species...and when that species doesn't have our best interests at heart. The first season is based on the first book in Liu Cixin's Remembrance of Earth's Past series, with a little of books two and three thrown in there at the end. The path ahead for the story is clear, but will Netflix give creators David Benioff, Dan Weiss and Alexander Woo the chance to explore it?

That remains to be seen. Right now, Netflix is still weighing its options, but the creators are planning ahead while they wait for word. "We have a pretty good idea of what a next season [would be]," Alexander Woo said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. "Hopefully we have a next season. We don't wanna count any chickens of any kind...

"We have a good idea and a framework of what season 2 would be, how that kind of maps to where the books are. Beyond that, it gets a little bit hazier. There are concepts, even, going forward, that we're like, 'I dunno how we're gonna do that.' We will. We'll have to. It'll be a good problem to have. If we get to the point where we have to figure out some of these things, we'll know we've gotten that far and get to maybe the end of the story, which would be fantastic. Certainly the season right in front of us is something that we have a strong idea about. Past that, hopefully we get there and we'll have a chance to figure the next one out."

Even in the first season, 3 Body Problem does a good job of conveying some pretty heady sci-fi concepts, including the utility of ultra-thin microfibers, the idea of taking someone's brain out of their body and launching them into space along a chain of nuclear explosions designed to accelerate them to maximum speed, the creation of multi-dimensional super-computers called sophons, and the three-body problem itself, a physics problem that explains why the aliens want to leave their inhospitable world for ours. Whatever the later books in Liu Cixin's series have in store, I have faith that Benioff, Weiss and Woo can handle it.

There are three books in the Remembrance of Earth's Past series. The first, simply titled The Three-Body Problem, is covered in the first season. The second is The Dark Forest and the trilogy ends with Death's End. Netflix is currently looking at the numbers and deciding if the show is worth investing in further. Personally, I really enjoyed the first season and hope the cast and crew get a chance to tell the whole story.
