Netflix has officially renewed its successful science fiction series 3 Body Problem for additional episodes! During the streamer's Upfront event on May 15, they announced the show would return, though they played coy with the official number of episodes and/or seasons. Netflix did something similar when finally renewing The Sandman, opting not to say "season 2."
But creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Wood released a statement saying they are "thrilled" to get to "tell this story through to its epic conclusion," implying Netflix will let them finish adapting all three of Cixin Liu's Remembrance of Earth's Past novels.
"We’re thrilled that we get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion. Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu’s magnificent trilogy, we hoped we’d be able to bring the audience to the end of the universe with us. Here we go!"
Previously, the showrunner trio said they weren't sure exactly how many seasons they would need to tell the entire story, estimating they're need around three or four seasons total.
Since Netflix isn't saying that the renewal is officially a "second season," it could mean that they plan to work with the creators as they write the scripts to determine how many episodes they will need to finish out the story.
3 Body Problem season 1 primarily adapts the first book, The Three-Body Problem, but lays the groundwork for both sequels, The Dark Forest and Death's End. Several Death's End storylines, like the Staircase Project and the Wallfacers Project, are introduced earlier in the show, foreshadowing what's to come.
The season 1 finale sets up Jovan Adepo's character, Dr. Saul Durand, to take over Luo Ji's storyline from the books, as he's officially announced as a Wallfacer.
After making its March 2024 premiere, 3 Body Problem spent three weeks in the No. 1 spot on Netflix's Top 10 Chart and an additional four weeks at a lower position. The series also received decent reviews from critics, earning an average score of 79% approval on Rotten Tomatoes.
