5 great moments we're looking forward to in House of the Dragon season 2
Blood and Cheese
Finally, we have now come to the Red Wedding-esque scene that could be the defining moment of House of the Dragon season 2. “Blood and Cheese” as it is referred to by gleeful book readers online, is the cruel retribution Rhaenyra’s husband Daemon exacts upon King Aegon and his greens in revenge for the death of Rhaenyra’s second son, Prince Lucerys Velaryon.
Writing a letter to Rhaenyra stating that they will seek revenge in the form of “a son for a son,” Daemon uses his contacts in the dark alleys of King’s Landing to hire two men, nicknamed ‘Blood’ and ‘Cheese.’ The former is a brute, the latter a humble rat catcher whose worked in the Red Keep. Using Cheese’s knowledge of the castle’s secret passageways, the two sneak into Queen Alicent’s chambers and wait for her daughter Queen Helaena to arrive with her grandchildren (who are also King Aegon’s children because Helaena is both Aegon's wife and sister, because Targaryens).
Upon Heleana’s arrival, Blood and Cheese kill her guard and take the whole group hostage before presenting Helaena with an impossible choice: which of her children should die in retribution for the death of Prince Lucerys? They force her to choose before killing her son Jaeherys, who is six years old.
If pulled off, this scene will be gut-wrenching; the cold-blooded murder of a child in front of the boy’s mother and grandmother will be devastating, and I fully expect the showrunners to draw out the agony. In Fire & Blood, Helaena actually chooses her younger son Maelor, only for the murderers to then treacherously kill the son she had chosen to survive instead. Currently it is unclear if Helaena’s younger son is a character in the show, or if she only has only her twins Jaehaerys and Jaehaera. The showrunners could easily make the scenario work in either case. I personally am not looking forward to watching something this dark, but reaction video people: it’s time to gather your friends and turn on your cameras. People are going to freak out.
House of the Dragon season 2 will consist of eight episodes instead of the previous season’s 10. This, along with the reshoots, makes it very difficult to know where in the Fire & Blood timeline this season will end, so there could be a lot more to look forward to. The scenes listed above are going to be the core of a great season of TV; hopefully the showrunners realize that it’s better to make some amazing episodes of TV and give the audience time to digest them rather than try to rush through every event they possibly can (Game of Thrones season 8 cough cough). Regardless, the above scenes will be amazing and the only way to know what comes next is to tune in to HBO, June here we come!
