6 things we want to see in HBO's Aegon the Conqueror spinoff

Word on the street is that HBO is "actively heating up" production on a Game of Thrones spinoff about Aegon the Conqueror, the first king of Westeros. What would that look like?

The little birds have been chirping in King's Landing, and they tell an interesting tale. Last week The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that development is "actively heating up" on another "Game of Thrones spinoff about Aegon the Conqueror, the first Targaryen king of Westeros. We've heard rumblings about an Aegon project in the past, but now there's a writer attached to crack the beast: Mattson Thomlin, the scribe who co-wrote The Batman and is writing its sequel, The Batman: Part Two.

HBO already has two Game of Thrones spinoffs in production: House of the Dragon, a prequel about the Dance of the Dragons civil war which is returning for its second season this summer; and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, a story about a knight and his squire roaming the land which is based on George R.R. Martin's Dunk & Egg novellas. Do we really want another?

If you ask me...of course! Although I have some reservations about the timing — namely that I hope any Aegon show won't air until after House of the Dragon wraps up the Dance — Aegon is a logical next spinoff for HBO to attempt. He and his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya are some of the most crucial figures in Westerosi history. Before Aegon's Conquest, the realm was split into warring petty kingdoms. King's Landing didn't even exist. After him, most of Westeros is begrudgingly united and looks much more like the Seven Kingdoms we know from Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. (Well, six kingdoms; Dorne held out for a while.)

"Actively heating up" or not, any spinoff about Aegon the Conqueror is still in very early days. There's no guarantee yet that it will actually happen. But that doesn't mean it's too early to start dreaming about some of the key things we'd want to see in the show! Here are six elements laid out in George R.R. Martin's novel Fire & Blood that we absolutely need to see in an Aegon the Conqueror spinoff, starting with...

Aegon and his sister-wives' complicated relationship

While wars and political scheming always get their due in any Game of Thrones story, the characters are what keep many of us coming back again and again. A television show about Aegon would be no different, so long as HBO nails its most important relationship: the complicated marriage between Aegon and his two sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys.

If Aegon is the composed ruler with grand plans for Westeros and the political and martial acumen to see them through, Visenya and Rhaenys are perfect polar opposite compliments. Visenya is severe and a fierce warrior. She rides Vhagar, the enormous old dragon we've come to know and fear on House of the Dragon, and instigates the formation of the Kingsguard. When Aegon ignores her advice to get more guards for himself after an assassination attempt by the Dornish, she draws her blade and cut him before any of his soldiers can react. Aegon can't really argue the point after that, since she made it clear that if she'd wished to kill him, she easily could have.

Rhaenys, on the other hand, loved to play musical instruments and flew her dragon Meraxes more than either of her siblings. If Visenya is austere, Rhaenys embodies the cheerier side of the Targaryen family. She still did more than her fair share of fighting, though...including an ill-fated campaign in Dorne that we'll talk about a later.

In Fire & Blood, Martin writes that it's believed Aegon married Visenya for duty, since they were the two oldest siblings, but that he married Rhaenys for love and spent most of his nights with her. Each of the three Targaryen siblings brings something interesting to the table, and to a potential TV show.
