6 things we want to see in HBO's Aegon the Conqueror spinoff
By Daniel Roman
Aegon's prophetic dream
House of the Dragon is set more than 150 years before Game of Thrones, but it has some strong ties to the original series which are very relevant to any spinoff HBO makes about Aegon the Conqueror. I'm talking about Aegon's prophetic dream where he foresaw the White Walker invasion, which King Viserys I Targaryen tells his daughter Rhaenyra about during House of the Dragon.
To date, George R.R. Martin hasn't written about Aegon's dream in any of his books, but HOTD showrunner Ryan Condal implied that this twist came from the author. Dating back to their days as a noble house in ancient Valyria, some Targaryens were born with the gift of prophetic dreaming. House of the Dragon revealed that Aegon possessed it as well, and that he dreamed that Westeros would fall to the White Walkers unless he united all the kingdoms behind a Targaryen ruler to fight them. Except Aegon didn't know it would be hundreds of years later, and the two Targaryens who would have to bring everyone together were Jon Snow and Daenerys.
Since HBO has already set up the idea of Aegon having this dream, it'd be madness for them to do an Aegon the Conqueror spinoff and not touch on it. After all, this was supposedly the big reason Aegon launched his campaign in the first place.
I'd be very interested to see how the show handles it. What would Aegon's sisters think of this prophetic dream? Would Aegon tell both Visenya and Rhaenys the same details about it? And how would the burden of this knowledge inform his dealings with the lords of Westeros, who would be totally oblivious to the doom which Aegon foresaw?
An Aegon's Conquest show would have a lot of space to color outside the lines. Since Martin hasn't laid any specifics about how Aegon handled the knowledge of his dream, the show could expand on it in ways that surprise longtime fans and newcomers alike. It's a golden opportunity, and I'd hope that the Aegon's Conquest spinoff makes the most of it.
As I mentioned at the top, it's still very early days for an Aegon's Conquest spinoff, but it's a lot of fun to dream about what it could be like. Did we touch on any of your favorite moments from Aegon, Visenya and Rhaenys' story? Are there others you are particularly excited about? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter @WiCnet!
Until we get more news about the Aegon show, we'll be channeling the majority of our excitement toward that other Game of Thrones spinoff we've been enjoying, House of the Dragon. That one premieres its second season this summer, and is due to hit a new high as it rolls into the meat of the Dance of the Dragons civil war. Just think, we may not be able to watch Aegon conquer the Six Kingdoms yet, but we can watch how his descendants throw all his hard work down the drain and brought the realm to its knees because they can't agree on who should sit on the throne!
