1. Severus Snape

This one is easy. Severus Snape is the most misunderstood character in the Harry Potter book and film series. There’s just no other character as complicated and hard to understand as Severus Snape.

Obviously, for most of the story, Snape is basically a bully to some of the children at Hogwarts. We know his intentions are good at times, especially when he’s trying to stop Professor Quirrell from carrying out his nefarious plan in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. But for the most part, Snape makes everyone, including readers, believe that he’s still on Lord Voldemort’s side right up until the very end of his life when it’s revealed that he’s been a double agent working with Dumbledore since James and Lily Potter were murdered by Voldemort many years before. Even before that, Snape tried to do everything he could to stop Voldemort from hurting the Potters. He is the one responsible for Voldemore targeting the Potters. Remember, it was Snape who overheard a piece of the prophecy spoken by Sybill Trelawney at the Hog’s Head before Harry’s birth.

Mostly, Snape does this because of his devotion to Lily Potter, who he was in love with from an early age. He went down a dark path, but eventually he tried to atone for his actions and those he wronged.

It’s not like Snape was acting the entire time, though. He had true disdain for Harry, as we see in his memories, but in the end, he is an example of bravery, courage, and true sacrifice.
