Alien: Romulus gets new trailer, Predator sequel gets star in Elle Fanning
By Dan Selcke
20th Century Studios is trying to revive its '70s and '80s monster movie hits in the form of sequels to both Alien and Predator, asking if we're still afraid of multi-mouthed, human-hunting extraterrestrials who stalk us in the depths of space and the jungles of South America respectively. Decide yourself as you watch the trailer for Alien: Romulus above. The movie is due out on August 16 of this year.
The first Alien movie, released back in 1979, was very simple: a group of blue collar space truckers were trapped on a ship with a deady alien species. It was a haunted house movie set in the void. Since then, the franchise has experimented with lots of different tones, but Alien: Romulus seems to take the series back to its beginning with a new group of young people running for their lives from a mysterious menace: this time, they're played by the likes of Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu. Fede Alvarez writes and directs.
Because everything in Hollywood comes as a package deal these days, there's also an Alien TV series in the works; that's supposed to come out on FX and Hulu sometime in 2025. And we can't forget about Alien's sister series Predator:
Elle Fanning in talks to headline next Predator movie
According to Deadline, Elle Fanning — who made her mark in movies like Super 8 and the Maleficent series — is in talks to star in a new Predator movie from director Dan Trachtenberg, who directed the 2022 Predator reboot Prey, which was a big hit on Hulu and which WinterIsComing.net writer Daniel Roman couldn't stop praising for days on end. So there are eyes on that one.
There's no word on what the new Predator movie will be about. Prey was set in the Great Northern Plains in 1719 and follows a young Comanche woman named Naru (Amber Midthunder) as she tested her skills against the titular Predator. That was innovative for the franchise. Will the follow-up be as bold? And is 20th Century leading up to another Alien vs. Predator movie in the future?
We can dream and/or fear for our souls.
