Arcane season 2 gets first teaser and release month

I don't know what's going on in the first teaser for Arcane season 2, but it's clearly the stuff of nightmares.

The Last of Us got a lot of hype for being one of the first great video game adaptations, but for my money, Netflix's Arcane beat it to that title. Arcane was an interesting case study. It's based on League of Legends, a multiplayer arena game where players battle it out to destroy each others' bases. That may not sound like great fodder for television, but League of Legends has very deep lore which isn't necessary to know to enjoy the base game. The show took that lore and turned it into something truly special, with a heart-wrenching story about sisters Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) and Jinx (Ella Purnell) clashing in the steampunk city of Piltover, complete with incredible art direction and top-notch writing.

Season 1 of Arcane ended on a massive cliffhanger, with the fates of Vi, Jinx and Piltover at large hanging in the balance. It goes without saying that season 2 is one of our most highly-anticipated shows of 2024. And now, at long last, we have our first teaser. Feast your eyes on this nightmare fuel:

This teaser seems to center around a villain named Singed, a mad scientist who will be familiar to players of the game. In the trailer we see him checking a pocketwatch, laughing creepily, and generally giving us reasons not to sleep at night. Then the teaser zooms out to show a monstrous being hanging above him. Who is that exactly? IGN has some very spoiler-y theories related to the werewolf-like champion Warwick. We didn't see Warwick in Arcane season 1...but it's possible we saw the beginning of his origin story.

Season 2 of Arcane will feature the return of Steinfeld and Purnell as Vi and Jinx, as well as Katie Leung as Caitlyn Kiramman. The press release for season 2 states that additional voice cast will "be announced" as we get closer to the show's release date.

Speaking of release windows, that's another thing this creepy new teaser gives us. Arcane season 2 will be hitting Netflix in November of 2024. I kind of love that Netflix hit us with a teaser right out of the gate in January for a show that isn't going to come out until almost next year. That givies us plenty of time to get the hype cooking!

Arcane season 1 is still available to stream on Netflix, so if you haven't watched it yet, you've got plenty of time to find out why so many people were losing their mind over this Emmy-winning animated series.
