Brandon Sanderson finishes writing fifth Stormlight Archive novel, Wind and Truth

The Year of Sanderson may have come to an end, but with a new Stormlight Archive novel on the horizon, there's no doubt that 2024 is going to be another big one for one of fantasy's most prolific authors. For the past three years, Brandon Sanderson has been hard at work on Wind and Truth, the fifth book in his magnum opus The Stormlight Archive. And now, he's officially done with writing his initial draft of the novel!

Sanderson shared the news in a Weekly Update video on his YouTube channel, published just before the turn of the new year.:

"Stormlight 5 is at 100%...I have finished the rought draft of the book," Sanderson proclaimed while being showered with confetti. "I have been working on this book for roughly three years. I still have six months or so to go on it [for revisions]."

Sanderson went on to explain that he'll be tracking revisions for the book so that fans can follow along, most likely in his usual weekly updates and on the percentage counters on his website. Sanderson typically does around five drafts for his books, which he records pretty transparently for readers via his various online platforms. Along with the announcement that the rought draft was done, Sanderson said that he's far along on his "2.0" draft as well, since the novel has been getting edited in chunks alongside his rough draft due to its size and multi-part format.

"This means we are almost assuredly going to hit our date," Sanderson continued. "I'm 99% sure of the book coming out first week of December [2024]. And so I'm really excited for you to read the book."

Wind and Truth is slated to release on December 6, 2024, the same weekend as this year's Dragonsteel convention. Pre-orders are currently live on your book retailer of choice.
