Brandon Sanderson is the hugely successful fantasy author behind series like Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive, not to mention the last few books in Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series. When he's not breaking Kickstarter records, he's looking for new worlds to conquer. Recently, he teamed up with graphic novelist Kazu Kibuishi for The Most Boring Book Ever, his first picture book meant for children. It's also Kibuishi's first time exploring this area. Knowing Sanderon's reputation, they'll be running this town in no time. Watch the trailer for the book above!
The Most Boring Book Ever, which is already on store shelves, is about a boy who sets out on a seemingly normal afternoon — which includes chores, homework, that kind of thing — only for events to take a fantastical turn involving dragons, pirates and more. Naturally, Sanderson provided the words while Kubuishi did the illustrations.
Obviously, the title is supposed to be ironic; if anybody sees this on a book shelf somewhere, know it is not actually meant to be a boring read. "The central premise of The Most Boring Book Ever is that the words do not match the pictures," Sanderson explained on TikTok. "The words describe events that are, shall we say, unremarkable and the pictures turn those events into something incredible."
That's a pretty cool idea for a picture book. Sanderson is a more-or-less inexhausible idea-making machine, so that shouldn't surprise anyone.
Beyond The Most Boring Book Ever, Sanderson will also release the fifth book in his Stormlight Archive series, Wind and Truth, later this year. Sanderson has a lot of series under his belt, but The Stormlight Archive is often considered his premiere work, so this one counts for a lot. It's another packed year for one of the most prolific fantasy authors working today.
Sanderson is kind of opposite of George R.R. Martin, who's been working on one book — The Winds of Winter — for over a decade, with other releases like Fire & Blood sprinkled in there. Sanderson releases so much you can barely keep up with it. If you're more on Martin's wavelength, there's a sale on a bunch of his work going on right now:
