Charlie Cox had "completely let go" of playing Daredevil before the show was revived

Next year, both Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock) and Vincent D'Onofrio (Wilson Fisk) will return in Daredevil: Born Again, a rebooted take on Netflix's Daredevil show ensconsed firmly within the continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This comes after both Daredevil and Kingpin have made numerous cameo appearances in the franchise, following the cancellation of the original Daredevil show in 2018.

Charlie Cox began his journey as Matt Murdock back in 2015. Originally a Netflix series, Daredevil quickly became one of the jewels of superhero television. It spawned an entire franchise, known as the 'Defenders Saga', introducing characters like Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, The Punisher, and Iron Fist. In 2022, the Defenders Saga switched from Netflix to Disney+'s streaming library. And around the same time, Charlie Cox was making MCU appearances, most notably in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Speaking to People, Cox explained the timeline of how Daredevil made its way to the MCU. "I think that we stopped shooting the original show at the end of 2016, beginning of 2018 and found out it was canceled somewhere in that period," he said, "And then it wasn't until midway through 2020 that we got a phone call from [President of Marvel Studios] Kevin [Feige] saying that they were interested in bringing the characters back."

Cox was keen to return, but at the same time, he revealed that he'd already moved on. "I completely let go."

While Cox was resigned to the notion that he'd never return as Matt Murdock, co-star Vincent D'Onofrio remained optimistic. "I'd moved on and occasionally Vincent and I would chat and he would say things like, 'Oh, they're going to call. I think they're going to us, but they're going to call us,'" Cox recalled. "And I would get off the phone and be like, the guy's delusional! He's got to let it go. It's going to be 10 years and he's still going. It's over. It's definitely over."

Well, it is happening. Daredevil: Born Again is expected to premiere in early 2025. It'll see the return of all our favorites, including Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson and Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page. Plus, during Disney's recent D23 presentation, it was announced that season 2 will begin filming soon.
