Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is in theaters Friday, May 24. The prequel to the lively, action-packed Mad Max: Fury Road lives up the hype, delivering breathtaking visuals and electrifying performances. However, Furiosa feels like the bonus track to its predecessor, serving better as an expansion pack.

Don’t get me wrong; Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is still a must-watch — and the bigger the screen you can see it on, the better! One of the reasons Furiosa is highly entertaining is its blood-thirsty villain, Dementus, portrayed by Chris Hemsworth.

Dementus is a gritty and compelling, two characteristics not many actors can pull off, but leave it to Hemsworth to get it done! At his core, Chris Hemsworth is an action star, and a criminally underrated one at that. In Furiosa, Hemsworth removes Thor’s cape. He leaves behind that lovable, loyal Marvel persona to embody a selfish, chaotic villain. And okay, Dementus also wears a cape (and fine, the cape also happens to be red), but that’s beside the point!

Come for Furiosa, stay for Dementus

The main star of Furiosa is Furiosa herself, wonderfully played by Anya Taylor-Joy. The actress honors Charlize Theron’s iconic character, but makes the character her own with a mega punch of kick-ass. The character viewers will likely find themselves more eager to see throughout the movie, though? Hemsworth’s Dementus, the ruthless leader of the rowdy Biker Horde.

I’ve never been much into prequels or spin-offs, but I would love to see Dementus on the big screen again to learn more about his story. There are so many layers to Dementus that can be explored. For starters, can we get the teddy bear’s backstory, please? In more than one scene, Dementus shares with Furiosa that he once had a family. This means that, at one point in time, Dementus was a vulnerable and caring man. And this is something audiences get glimpses of amid the mayhem Dementus unleashes in Furiosa.

This weekend, Mad Max fans and newcomers alike be go into Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga for the titular character, but they’ll stay for Dementus. The most exciting scenes happen when Hemsworth takes over the screen with his evil charm, demanding our full attention, which we are more than happy to give.

dark. Next. Furiosa is slower and messier than Fury Road, but still high-octane fun. Furiosa is slower and messier than Fury Road, but still high-octane fun
